From Ashes to Crown
Part 2 – The Mark of Destiny
The days rolled by in Obot village, and Ekong kept working hard to help his mother. He fetched firewood, carried water, and even labored at the farmlands of wealthier families just to earn a few tubers of yam. Yet, no matter how much he toiled, poverty never loosened its grip.
One afternoon, while resting by the stream, Ekong overheard two boys from the chief’s compound. They were boasting about the festival of trials, an event held once every seven years. The festival was not only a celebration of the gods but also a chance for hidden warriors to be revealed. Whoever displayed courage and wisdom during the trials was often favored by the elders and the oracle.
The words struck something inside Ekong. Could this be the path to change his story?
That night, under the watch of a pale moon, he sat again carving wood. His mother saw him and sighed deeply.
“My son,” she said softly, “the world does not favor the poor. Do not let your heart be broken chasing dreams that do not belong to us.”
But Ekong shook his head.
“Mama, I am not chasing what does not belong to us. I believe… I believe there is something greater waiting for me.”
His words carried a fire that startled his mother. She said nothing, but in her heart, she whispered a prayer.
When the day of the trials came, the entire village gathered in the square. Drums thundered, the air thick with dust and anticipation. Young men from noble families paraded proudly, their skins oiled and their bodies strong.
Ekong stood among them, barefoot, his clothes patched, his hands rough from labor. People scoffed.
“What is this one doing here?”
“Does he think kingship is for beggars?”
But Ekong did not flinch. The words of the wandering elder echoed in his mind: “The crown chooses not the rich, but the worthy.”
The first trial was announced—a test of strength, courage, and endurance. The crowd roared. Ekong clenched his fists. His time had come.

Part 1 – The Boy Nobody Saw
In the quiet village of Obot, where the morning sun kissed the rusted zinc roofs and children fetched water before school, lived a boy named Ekong.
Ekong’s life was one of lack. His father had died early, and his mother, Ekaette, sold firewood to keep food on their mat. Most days, they ate once, and even then, it was watery soup with barely enough garri to go around.
The villagers pitied him, but some mocked him. Children laughed at his torn school uniform, and elders shook their heads whenever he walked by. “That boy will amount to nothing,” they whispered.
But unknown to them, Ekong carried something greater than wealth—a stubborn heart that refused to bow to fate.
He dreamed of a better life, not for himself alone, but for his mother, his people, and his village. Every night, while others slept, he sat under the moonlight, carving small wooden figures and imagining stories of warriors and kings.
It was during one of those nights that fate began to stir. A wandering elder, half-blind and known for speaking in riddles, passed by and saw Ekong carving. He stopped and watched quietly.
“Young one,” the old man croaked, “do you know the hands of a king are shaped not by gold, but by fire?”
Ekong looked up, puzzled.
“I am no king, Baba. I am only a poor boy,” he replied.
The old man smiled faintly, his eyes glinting in the moonlight.
“Perhaps. But remember this night, for the crown chooses not the rich, but the worthy.”
And with that, he vanished into the darkness.
Ekong didn’t know it yet, but his journey from ashes to crown had just begun.
