Pa Jacob Sogboyega Odulate: Founder of Alabukun Medicine
Pa Jacob Sogboyega Odulate, fondly known as โBlessed Jacob,โ was a pioneering Nigerian pharmacist, inventor, and entrepreneur best remembered as the founder of the famous Alabukun Powder, one of Nigeriaโs most enduring indigenous medicines.
Originally from Ikorodu in present-day Lagos State, Odulate spent most of his productive life in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he developed and commercialised his medicinal innovation. In 1918, he formulated Alabukun Powder, a pain-relief remedy that quickly gained popularity across Nigeria for its effectiveness and accessibility. The name โAlabukunโ is derived from the Yoruba phrase meaning โBlessed Jacobโ or โGiver of Grace,โ reflecting both his personal nickname and the relief the medicine provided to users.
At a time when colonial Nigeria relied heavily on imported pharmaceuticals, Odulateโs success represented an early example of indigenous entrepreneurship in modern medicine. Alabukun became a household name and remains widely available in Nigeria today, with distribution extending beyond the country to international markets.
Beyond his business achievements, Pa Jacob Odulateโs legacy is also reflected in his family. One of his children, Chief Mrs. Folake Solanke, SAN, made history as Nigeriaโs first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria. In honour of her father, her law firm in Ibadan is named Alabukun Chambers, preserving the family name and its association with excellence and service.
Images of Pa Jacob Odulate often show him in chieftaincy regalia, underscoring his respected status within his community and his recognition as a successful entrepreneur and community figure.
