Terrorism has no foundation in the teachings of Islam. The Qur'an condemns the killing of innocent people and upholds justice, mercy, and the sanctity of human life. Those who commit acts of terror in the name of religion represent themselves not Islam.

Many Muslims believe that the global "War on Terror," led by the United States after the September 11 attacks, was used not only as a security campaign but also in ways that unfairly associated Islam and Muslim societies with terrorism. This contributed to widespread suspicion of Muslims and damaged the image of Islamic civilization around the world.

There are reasons behind many of the narratives we see today, and they did not begin now. From the colonial era, when Christian missionaries arrived alongside the colonial masters, many Muslims believe that one of the major targets of their campaign was Islam. For many Yoruba Muslims, that perception has never completely disappeared.

Before the global War on Terror, far fewer Muslim majority countries were widely portrayed as centres of terrorism than they were afterward.

In recent times, Muslims have repeatedly been accused of being behind Boko Haram and other violent crimes, even though they are among the greatest victims of terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria. Yet, there have also been reported cases involving Christians, including some pastors, who were accused of staging kidnappings or fabricating abduction stories.

One example is the allegation involving the Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Grace Ogunleye, over claims that she staged her own abduction.

Another was the incident that threw the town of Ikonifin in Ola Oluwa Local Government Area of Osun State into confusion following reports surrounding a church leader, Pastor Olatoke, and an alleged fake kidnapping.

When you consider these incidents, one cannot help but ask: Why are Muslims and Islam so often blamed first? Why is there such a readiness to connect Islam with terrorism, even before investigations are concluded? Why are the crimes of individuals frequently used to stigmatize an entire faith of nearly two billion people? We know there are reasons behind everything, but it will fail

Justice demands fairness. If criminals are treated as individuals when they are Muslims, then the same standard must apply when the accused are Christian. The wrongdoing of any individual should never become the identity of an entire religion.
