She was taken in by her uncle, her father’s younger brother, who lived in the city. “You’ll be fine,” the villagers told her. “He will take care of you. You’ll go to school with his children. You’re lucky.” But luck didn’t follow her to the city. Only silence did.

Her uncle’s home was crowded, but cold. His children treated her like an outsider. His wife barely spoke to her. But Felicia endured, hopeful that school would offer an escape—something normal to cling to.

But it wasn’t the city that changed Felicia—it was what happened behind a locked bedroom door.
