Ukraine's president has used a speech at the Nato summit in Turkey to urge allies to deliver the air defence systems Kyiv urgently needs to protect it from escalating Russian attacks.

We are capable of doing everything else ourselves, but when it comes to air defence, we need our partners' determination," Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday morning.

Zelensky's call for help rings with extra intensity after Russian missiles rained down on the Ukrainian capital twice in less than a week, crashing into blocks of flats and killing more than 50 civilians.

The summit in Ankara will also be a chance for Zelensky to hold a crucial meeting with Donald Trump and press home his case that Russia's "brutal" attacks are a show of weakness, not strength, and that Vladimir Putin should be pressured into talks towards a "dignified" peace.

The latest strikes on Ukraine come as it has been stepping up its own long-range drone attacks against Russia, hitting oil refineries and military targets there and causing significant fuel shortages and power cuts.

A French appeals court has upheld a conviction on far-right leader Marine Le Pen for misusing EU funds but shortened a ban on her running for elected office, opening the door for her to stand in next year’s presidential election.

The court rules that Le Pen must serve a three-year jail term; however, it said two of those years were suspended and it ordered her to wear an electronic monitoring tag for one year.

The appeals court also effectively reduced the amount of time she is barred from running for office to just 15 months – technically a 45-month ban with 30 months suspended – and gave her a €100,000 ($114,000) fine.

The ruling means that she could still run for office in France’s 2027 presidential election while wearing an electronic ankle monitor.

Here's the latest

• Global stakes: US President Donald Trump has landed in Turkey ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, as his growing criticism continues to strain the 77-year-old alliance. NATO’s chief says US allies have made “remarkable progress” with defense spending — a salient issue for Trump, who has called on them to “step up.”

• Turkey jet sales: Trump is expected to signal at the summit that he is willing to sell Turkey F-35 fighter jets, according to two US officials, reversing a ban he put in place during his first term that has since been ratified into law.

• Strait of Hormuz: The Trump administration anticipates security in the Strait of Hormuz to be among the key topics discussed by NATO leaders, according to a senior US official.

• Ukraine in focus: The president is also expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ankara. Trump vowed to end Russia’s war within 24 hours of taking office — but his administration has yet to find a path to peace.

The woman suspected in the Monaco bombing attack that wounded a Ukrainian businessman has been found dead in Ukraine, officials in that country said on Tuesday.

Interpol previously named the bombing suspect as 39-year-old Anastasiia Berezovska, who was born in Ukraine and recently resided in Germany.

Ukrainian authorities have detained two men on suspicion of murdering Berezovska.

Police said that one of the men – a current employee of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate – confessed to the murder of Berezovska and claimed that the second suspect, who is a former law enforcement officer, was an accomplice.

Berezovska arrived in Ukraine on July 1, and she communicated with her family and the two men, according to a statement from Ukrainian National Police on Tuesday. Investigators learned that both men had repeatedly made bank transfers and cryptocurrency payments to Berezovska, which prompted police to treat them “as individuals potentially involved in the attempted murder in Monaco.”

Police said urgent search measures were carried out against the two men, during which the active intelligence office confessed to the murder and had not informed his superiors of his contacts with Berezovska or the bank transfers to her. He also said he had “acted on his own initiative,” the police statement said.

Additionally, during a search of the former law enforcement officer’s residence, a basement room resembling a torture chamber was discovered,” the police statement said.

A series of explosions have been heard near the hotel where President Emmanuel Macron is due to stay in Syria.

Roads have been sealed off and security measures ‌implemented after the blasts, that were heard in Damascus.

At least 18 were injured, including four police officers, in the explosions, that went off as Macron entered the Syrian presidential palace.

A witness told Reuters news agency explosions went off in the vicinity of the French leader's hotel and verified footage appeared to show smoke rising from a road near the Four Seasons in the Syrian capital.

Macron is the first major Western leader to visit Damascus since former Syrian dictator, Bashar al Assad, was toppled - to be replaced by ex-al Qaeda commander and rebel leader, Ahmed al Sharaa.

The French president was received by the Syrian leader at the presidential palace shortly after news of the explosions broke, according to Syrian state TV.

The Elysee Palace said the president did not hear any explosions while on his way to meet al Sharaa.

The French president's office added that he was safe and that his visit to Syria was continuing.

Syrian state TV also said there were two blasts, caused by explosive devices - one put in a garbage bin and the other in a parked car.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility.

An investigation is currently taking place at the scene of the attack. Footage widely circulated on social media showed a van and a motorcycle on fire with blood stains on the street.

Macron arrived in the country on Monday night with an economic delegation and is due to sign memorandums of understanding with his counterpart as the devasted country tries to lure investors to help it rebuild after 14 years of war.

The world seems to be changing at lightning speed, so it’s perhaps good to know that some things remain the same — at least when it comes to the most livable city.

Copenhagen has taken the No. 1 spot on the annual list from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) for the second year running.

The Danish capital beat out Austria’s Vienna, which previously had a three-year run at the top, for the second year in a row on the annual list, released on Tuesday.

In third place was Australia’s Melbourne, rising one spot since the previous year. Another Australian city, Sydney, jumped from sixth to fourth place.

The Swiss city of Zurich, which tied with Vienna in second place last year, dropped three spots, with fellow Swiss city Geneva just behind at number six. Osaka, in Japan, retained seventh place, while Australia’s Adelaide came in at eighth. Tokyo was 10th.

Meanwhile, the repercussions of the war with Iran were reflected in the rankings of cities in the Gulf region, which saw a decline in scores for the stability category.

The biggest downward movers were the Omani capital Muscat, falling 14 places to 123rd, and Kuwait City, dropping 12 spots to 105th.

1. Copenhagen, Denmark

2. Vienna, Austria

3. Melbourne, Australia

4. Sydney, Australia

5. Zurich, Switzerland

Fifa's statutes are clear about political interference. It is not permitted.

Countries are regularly suspended from international football because of government involvement in national football associations.

Pakistan, for instance, have been suspended three times in the space of eight years.

When it comes to Infantino and Trump, are the rules different?

The World Cup draw, during which Trump was bestowed with the inaugural Fifa Peace Prize, felt like the culmination of two years of Infantino fostering a close relationship with the US president.

"You can always count, Mr President, on my support, on the support of the entire football community to help you make peace and make the world prosper all over the world," Infantino told Trump when presenting the award.

Human rights campaign group FairSquare complained to Fifa's ethics committee in December that Infantino broke the governing body's rules on political neutrality in creating the prize.

With no response, last month 50 MEPs wrote a new letter to the ethics committee, external demanding action. Like many situations with Fifa, there has been no response.

Fast-forward to the tournament, and Trump has not been to a single World Cup match.

But here he was, taking ownership of Balogun's situation.

It was another example of football not doing the talking.

We had seen it with Somali referee Omar Artan.

Artan was denied access to the US by immigration officials, with Infantino accused of losing control of his own World Cup.

Yet when he faced questions from the media last month - for the first time in over three years - his response was, at best, glib.

"Just, you know, chill, relax," Infantino said of Artan's plight.

Controversy has always felt just around the corner. That something was bubbling under the surface.

And through it all, rarely have there been answers or transparency.
