Around 11 p.m., my neighbour and his wife started fighting again, as usual.
The shouting was loud enough for everyone in the compound to hear, and before long, it became physical. You could hear things being broken and the unmistakable sounds of blows being exchanged.
When the noise refused to die down, I peeped through my window to see what was happening.
By about 11:45 p.m., I watched him throw her out of the house.
It wasn't the first time he had chased her out, But it was the first time he had done it in the middle of the night.
As she walked away, she turned immediately and caught me peeping. I quickly closed my curtain, but I was too late. A few seconds later, there was a knock on my door.
When I opened it, she was standing there in tears.
I invited her in and told her she could spend the night in my apartment. I offered her my bed and told her I'd sleep on the floor.
She cried for a while before asking me a question that caught me off guard.
"Is it bad to be married and in love?"
I told her no. I told her no one deserved to go through what she was experiencing.
For the next thirty minutes, I encouraged her. I told her she deserved better than a man who constantly abused & humiliated her, and that if she didn't choose herself, nobody else would. She thanked me & said she had made up her mind. She said she was done with the marriage & would leave him and put herself first.
Then she asked if I could drive her to her mother's house.
By then, it was already 12:15 a.m.
I told her I didn't think it was safe to be on the road at that hour, anything can happen.
She started crying uncontrollably.
She said she couldn't stay there another minute. She knew she wasn't going to sleep that night.
The pain, the shame, the humiliation, everything that had happened had left her emotionally shattered. She said she felt overwhelmed, depressed, and all she wanted was to be with her mother.
I asked where her mother lived.
"Ikorodu," she replied.
Ikorodu ke? We were in Agege!
I almost changed my mind, but I couldn't bring myself to leave her in that state. So I picked up my car keys and decided to help.
That night, I drove from Agege to Ikorodu. I risked being stopped by the police, encountering robbers on the road, or worse, kidnappers.
When we got there, I helped carry her bags into her mother's house and drove back to Agege, praying & speaking in tongues throughout.
I got home safely around 2:45 a.m., exhausted from fear of driving through Lagos at that hour, and the long drive. Sleep didn't come until about 3:30 a.m.
Thankfully, it was the weekend.
I woke up around 10 a.m. to another commotion outside. Curious, I opened my curtain again and peeped to see what was happening.
Ladies and gentlemen...
The same woman I had driven all the way to Ikorodu the previous night was stepping out of a taxi.....and running excitedly into the arms of her husband.
He hugged her tightly, kissed her, took the bags from her, the same bags I had helped carry just a few hours ago
and together they walked back into the house, laughing, playing and gisting like nothing had happened.
I closed my curtain in shame, pain and indescribable anger, removed all my clothes, picked up my Bible, knelt down and swore never to interfere in another person's relationship again.
Never again. Never ever... Ever never!
The End
