When I asked for a cup of capuchino before the start of a meeting

I pushed back on getting a smartphone and managed my analogue phone for nearly 2 years in UK until I returned to Nigeria in 2014.

I held on until I was constrained to get one so I can do email on the go when I picked up a consulting gig; was lagging behind in providing project updates to my clients.

I also didn't want to subscribe to WhatsApp based on my experience with Blackberry messenger. When my Blackberry got stolen around 2011, I didn’t bother to replace it because of the constant barrage of messages.

I usually like it quiet around me, and that I used to shutout noise and disconnect from people and machines to make out time for personal prayer and devition and other spiritual disciplines like contemplative worship, Bible study and meditation.

Then I had a weekly prayer schedule and a list of family friends I prayed and interceded for; I never quite told them I had them on my prayer list and sessions.

Periodically when I sense my spiritual senses are getting dull, I will bolt away to a quiet place for a weekend of retreat; spending time in silence, quiet reflection and prayer. I always felt refreshed and renewed after each retreat; but it's been about 5 years since I went to a quiet place for my personal retreat.

I also kept a prayer journal where I "wrote" my prayers and poured out my heart to God in worship that sounded like the Psalms.

It's now been years since I made entries in my prayer journal and it hurts my heart. I feel that spiritual void as if a part of me has become frail and atrophying due to lack of consistent use of the spiritual muscles that get pumped up each time I knelt down on my bedside to commune with God!

Yes, I have become far much busier with responsibilities as my career progressed but I have so starved that inner part of me that deeply yearned for God.

I miss that tangible presence of God in a deep and intimate way on a daily; for each day rolls by with the chaos of activities that fill and crowd our day as we eke out a living.

My mom was a deeply spiritual woman. I woke up at night to step out to p*e and I will see her knelt beside her bed, talking and pleading with God as if HE was seated right beside her.

I forgot that I ate akpu and was wondering how the authentic utara aroma that filled our living room was oozing from, until I held my hand to my face; the smell was still there oooh.

You see I literally ate akpu almost every morning before walking to my otakara primary school as MamaFelix sold akpu at the local Isinweke Market.

So me and akpu go a loooooong way back, but these days, I hardly get to see akpu let alone get to eat one.

But yesterday a close friend gifted me two wraps of akpu, the loi-loi type wrapped in takeaway cellophane bag and I didn’t think twice about taking the akpu wraps home.

Emmm that's my testimony for now...
