IN THIS GARRI PROCESSING BUSINESS, I HAVE BURNT MY FINGERS AND I HAVE LEARNT A LOT.

I burnt my fingers when I used to rely on cassava supply from Igbo Ora for my garri production;

• The pick-up load could hardly produce 10 bags of garri (22 custard rubbers per bag) and the landing cost at my Oluke factory was well over 50%, which automatically made the productions loses.
• Most of the cassava varieties from that area are high starch/low fibre, do not support maximum yield in garri production. Troubles experienced during pressing because of high residual starch was another head ache entirely.

I burnt my fingers when I used to buy cassava tuber measured in sacks at Abule Asha and Oke nla (Sunren) in Ifo local government, taking the tubers with boat across river for my production at Oluke factory.
• Buying cassava with sacks is a complete goof for a garri processor.
• Garri production cannot accommodate too much logistic cost on transportation – using boat to cross the river and bikes at two different points for same production.

I have burnt my fingers when I settled for unmatured tubers for garri production all because I did not want the production to stop.
• Unmatured tubers produced more of milk and shafts rather than garri.
• I barely got 4 bags of garri against my expectation of 9 bags minimum.

I have burnt my fingers when I procured TME 419 tubers of 19 months for garri production.
• The grated mash had full impressive body without much water after grating but refused to rise during frying.
• The garri quality was fantastic but the quantity yield was a total loss.

I have burnt my fingers when I bought yet to be harvest cassava on the farm, without much knowledge of cassava farm inspection.
• When the selling price per ton or pick up is favourable to farmers, they hardly sell in acres or any other farm measurement.
• But they lure you to buy with farm measurements when the price is low.
• They capitalize on your desperacy to sell in acres.
• I eventually harvested just half of my expectation

I have burnt my fingers in so many ways and areas of this Cassava Processing Business, but I have also learnt a lot.
• I have learnt that it is not all varieties of cassava that I can use for profitable garri production.
• I have learnt that I cannot compete in buying price with fufu processors and industrial processors.
• I have learnt that garri production economy cannot accommodate too much logistic cost.
• I have learnt that I cannot compete in same market with local/cottage processors.
• I have learnt how to procure cassava tuber for profitable garri production.
• I have learnt how NOT to procure cassava tubers for profitable garri production.
• I have learnt when to produce garri in large quantity for future sales.
• I have learnt when NOT to produce at all.
• I have learnt the seasons to cultivate cassava in large quantity for the following year production.
• I have learnt when to rely more on procurement from other farmers for my factory production.
• I have learnt when to leave my comfort zone to go and produce garri at other processors’ facility.

I HAVE BURNT MY FINGERS A LOT AND I HAVE LEARNT A LOT AND I AM STILL LEARNING.

Still, God no go shame us.

PROJECTING AND PLANNING FOR 2025 CASSAVA HARVEST.

Many people planting cassava now would be surprised how the buying companies they are targeting for sales will use low price bargaining to frustrate them by the time of harvest in 2025.

The truth is that many of these industrial cassava users are also planting in large quantity at the moment. Many of them are presently engaging in outgrowers scheme or similar engagement to cultivate more than 50% of their factory requirements. With this, they have a better edge of price control during the harvest.

Of course, the price of a ton of tuber will never go back to the farm gate price of N20,000 to N25,000 it used to be. But it will definitely come down to as low as N40,000 to N50,000. With this price projection and ongoing expenses of cultivating an acre of cassava farm, it is easy for anyone to tell the fate of large scale cassava farmer harvesting in 2025.

Until there is a strong system that makes the Economics of Production (EOP) determines the selling price rather than the market forces, this anomalies in price will definitely continue. And only those farmers and processors who understand the dynamics and are able to act rightly at any given time will keep being on top of the game.

As a processor, there are season when you need to go all the way to grow cassava for the following year factory operations. And there are season you need to grow minimally, just as a backup. Because in those glut seasons, it always pay a processor to buy cassava from others rather than harvesting from his own farm for production.

And for the farmers who have chosen to grow cassava in large quantity, it is advised that you make plans for value addition, no matter how little. That will be your saving grace from selling at ridiculous price during the gluts season. With value addition lines like cassava chips or garri production, you can easily convert your harvest and possibly store until the price become favourable.

I recommend that you read my ebooks on HOW TO RUN A COMMERCIAL GARRI PROCESSING BUSINES PROFITABLY and INVESTMENT AND STRATEGY OUTLOOK ON CASSAVA CHIPS BUSINESS to have Economics ideas of these value addition lines. Yes, you already know how to produce Garri and cassava chips but it takes more to succeed in these businesses.

UNRAVELLING THE REAL CASSAVA WEALTH TO OUR NATION; Beyond where we are at the moment.

Nigeria is not even scratching the surface of where the real wealth in Cassava Value Chain is yet.

It is very important that we make decisive efforts to strengthen scientific research in exploiting the real value of cassava. Beyond Ethanol, Sorbitol, Starch etc, there are still a lot of valuable products we can harness through cassava. From cassava and its derivatives, production of bio-plastic, bio-concrete, glutamic acid, herbicides and many more are no longer new discoveries to the world.

Of course, there is a limit to what we can get through improvising technology. This is where the need to leverage our relationship with China and Indian comes in. With these two Nations, we are good to go on the needed science and technology to explore and exploit the real wealth in the value chain. Our Nation need to deliberately pursue knowledge transfer especially on cassava exploration in its relationship with these two countries.

And it may just not be enough to leave this in the hands of existing or new institutions and commissions. We have to dig the foundation of this Project decisively through appropriate legislations. Extended efforts need to made towards taking our discoveries into market. Not just abandoning them on the library cabinets of institutions.

It has to come from top to bottom and everyone, sections and sectors must buy into it.

Cassava is a blessing to our Nation. And it will be a big shame if our generation could not initiate and establish this exploit.

God no go shame us!
