Real friends donāt just help they protect your dignity in silence.
I own a little independent bookstore in our neighborhood. Weāre not fancy just shelves full of stories and a couple of cozy chairs.
Last week, a tired-looking mom walked in with her 8-year-old son clutching her hand. It was pouring rain outside. She quietly asked if we had any used books under $5 because it was her sonās birthday and he really wanted a new adventure book.
She kept glancing at the price tags, doing the math in her head. I could see it the same look Iāve had before: choosing between groceries and making your kid feel special.
I pulled out a brand-new hardcover of his favorite series (the one heād been staring at with big eyes) and said, āMy supplier sent this one with a damaged cover. I was going to return it anyway. Would you do me a huge favor and take it off my hands? No charge.
Her sonās face lit up like Christmas morning. The momās eyes filled with tears. She whispered, āAre you sure?ā I told her it would actually help me out.
They left holding that book like treasure.
The next morning, I found a handwritten note slipped under the shop door. It was from the little boy, with a drawing of a knight fighting a dragon. In big crayon letters it said:
āThank you for the best birthday ever. You made my mom smile again. I will read it every night.ā
Best āreturnā Iāve ever gotten.
