Puberty Changes In Girls:

During puberty, girls undergo a series of physical, hormonal, and emotional changes as their bodies mature into adulthood. Here are some key changes that occur during puberty in girls:

Breast Development (Thelarche): One of the earliest signs of puberty in girls is the development of breast buds under the ni***es. This typically developed between the ages of 8 and 13.

Growth of P***c Hair: P***c hair begins to grow, starting with fine, straight hair and becoming coarser and curlier over time. Hair also grows in the underarms.

Growth Spurt: Girls experience a rapid growth spurt, with most of their height increase occurring in the first half of puberty. This growth is driven by hormonal changes and typically occurs between the ages of 9 and 15.

Menstruation (Menarche): Menstruation, or the start of the menstrual cycle, usually occurs about two to two and a half years after the onset of breast development. This milestone marks the ability to become pregnant.

Body Fat Redistribution: Girls tend to gain more fat, especially in the hip and thigh area, which is influenced by estrogen levels. This helps prepare the body for potential pregnancy in the future.

My girl has early puberty. Should I be worried? 19/03/2024

✅ What is puberty and what is considered early?

Puberty is when a child develops changes to an adult.

⚠️ Early puberty in girls is when there is breast development before the age of 8 years or me**es before 10 years.

✅What is the cause?

In most girls there is no underlying cause. Some might be related to obesity, certain food, chemicals or environmental triggers (endocrine disruptors). A small percentage is due to an underlying medical condition

✅ What are the effects? Does every girl with early puberty need treatment?

⚠️Early or precocious puberty causes an early growth spurt but results in a short final height due to faster bone maturation and fusion of the growth plates due to the effects of estrogen.

⚠️ Some girls may benefit from treatment to suppress progression of puberty until an appropriate age to improve height outcome. This depends on the following :

1️⃣ The predicted final height - is it acceptable ?

We estimate this from the bone age (a simple Xray of the left hand/wrist) and parents height. However it might overestimate as it does not take into account how fast puberty progress.

2️⃣ What stage of breast development is the child at? What is the progression?

For borderline cases where the stage is very early, a period of monitoring over 3-6 months is usually advised first as some types of breast development (premature thelarche) will progress very slowly or regress depending on the cause.

3️⃣ Is your child emotionally & psychologically affected ?

If yes, then treatment should be considered until an appropriate age.
Consult with your pediatric endocrinologist or pediatrician if you are concern your girl has early puberty
