Here are the four main stages of wound healing:
🩸 1) Hemostasis (stopping the bleeding) — minutes to hours
Blood vessels narrow to reduce bleeding
Platelets stick together and form a clot
The clot becomes a scab, which protects the wound
Goal: stop bleeding and seal the wound surface
🔥 2) Inflammation (clean-up phase) — 1 to 3 days
Area becomes red, warm, swollen, and tender
White blood cells arrive to:
destroy germs
remove dead tissue and debris
You might see clear or slightly yellow fluid — that can be normal early on
Goal: prevent infection and clean the wound
🌱 3) Proliferation (rebuilding tissue) — days to weeks
New blood vessels grow (granulation tissue — looks red and bumpy)
Collagen forms to rebuild the skin’s framework
Edges of the wound pull together (contraction)
New skin cells (epithelium) grow over the wound
Goal: fill in and cover the wound
🧵 4) Maturation/Remodeling (strengthening) — weeks to months
Collagen fibers reorganize and strengthen
Scar becomes:
flatter
paler
softer over time
Skin never returns to 100% original strength, but gets close (≈80–90%)
Goal: make the repaired tissue stronger and more flexible
