Chapter 2: The Dying Ember
The heavy doors to the rooftop creaked open, groaning against the force of the wind. The guards didn't gently lead me; they dragged me, my heels skidding against the wet concrete. The rain had picked up a cold, needle-like drizzle that soaked through my midnight-blue silk gown until it felt like a heavy, freezing second skin.
They threw me down. I landed hard on my knees, the rough surface scraping my skin. I didn't cry out. I couldn't. My throat felt like it was filled with ash.
"Careful now," Meilong’s voice drifted over the sound of the rain. She was standing under a large black umbrella held by another guard, looking down at me like I was something unpleasant she’d stepped on. "We can’t have you looking too 'handled' before the police arrive. A su***de needs to look... peaceful."
I looked up at her, my hair plastered to my face. "You’re wearing my mother’s pearls."
Meilong touched the necklace at her throat, a slow, taunting smile spreading across her lips. "They look better on me anyway, don't they? Your mother had such a 'safe' taste. I prefer things with a bit more... fire."
I turned my gaze to Liang Hao. He was standing by the ledge, staring out at the night skyline as if he already owned every light in the city. He looked so calm. This was the man I had shared my bed with. This was the man I thought would help me carry the Li legacy.
"Hao," I rasped. "Look at me."
He didn't turn. "There’s nothing to look at, Mei. Just a girl who wasn't strong enough to keep what was hers."
"My father treated you like a son!" I screamed, the sound torn away by the wind. "He gave you a seat at the table when you had nothing!"
"And I took the whole table," Hao said, finally turning to face me. His eyes were dead. No regret, no anger. Just boredom. "Your father was a sentimental fool. He thought loyalty was a currency. I taught him and I’m teaching you that power is the only thing that matters."
He stepped closer, the guards moving aside to let him pass. He knelt in front of me, his expensive suit trousers getting ruined in the rain, but he didn't seem to care. He grabbed my jaw, his grip bruisingly tight.
"Tonight, the Li Corporation officially becomes the Liang Empire," he whispered, his breath warm against my cold skin. "The news will report that the grief-stricken Li Mei, unable to cope with the pressure of her parents' death and her own financial failures, took a leap of despair. The su***de note is already in your bedroom. It’s written in your hand or should l say a very good imitation of it."
"I will haunt you," I hissed, my eyes burning with a rage I didn't know I possessed. "I will be the shadow that never lets you sleep."
He laughed, a dry, hollow sound. "Dead girls don't haunt people, Mei. They just rot."
He stood up and nodded to the guards. They hauled me toward the edge. I fought then. I fought with every ounce of strength I had left, kicking and biting, but it was useless. They shoved me against the cold iron railing of the ledge.
The drop was terrifying. Below, the streetlights looked like tiny, uncaring stars.
"Do it," Meilong urged, stepping out from under her umbrella. Her face was twisted with a sudden, ugly envy. "Push her! I’m tired of looking at her face!"
"No," Hao said, stopping the guard's hand. He looked at me, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. "Let her do it. Give her one last bit of 'Li pride.' Jump, Mei. Or we'll make it very, very painful for you before you go over anyway."
I looked at them one last time. I realized then that my love had been my weakness. My trust had been my blindfold. But as I looked into the abyss, the fear vanished. It was replaced by a cold, crystalline vow.
"I won't let your filthy hands be the last thing I feel," I said, my voice echoing with a strange, haunting authority.
I climbed onto the ledge myself. The wind tried to push me back, but I leaned into it.
"I'll see you in your nightmares, Liang Hao," I said. "And Meilong? Enjoy the pearls while you can. They’re stained with blood now."
I didn't wait. I stepped back.
The sensation of falling was a violent rush of air. For a heartbeat, I felt weightless. Then, the cold wind turned into a roar in my ears. The ground rushed up to meet me a wall of blackness.
If there is a God... if there is a Devil... give me back my life.
The impact was a white-hot explosion of pain, and then... nothing

Chapter 1: The Price Of Trust
"Where is my husband?"
I smoothed the silk of my midnight-blue gown. The Li Corporation’s 30th Anniversary Gala was a success, but the weight of the crown was heavy. I just wanted to find Liang Hao and go home.
The assistant pointed toward the North Wing, his eyes darting away from mine. "He’s in the VIP lounge, Madam. He said he needed a moment alone."
"Alone? On a night like this?" I chuckled. I had two glasses of vintage champagne in my hands, ready to toast to our future.
I reached the mahogany doors, but they weren't fully closed. A sliver of light spilled out, along with a laugh that made my skin crawl. It was high-pitched, feminine, and sickeningly familiar.
"Oh, Hao... stop," Sun Meilong giggled. "What if your 'darling' wife walks in?"
My breath hitched. Meilong? My best friend?
I froze, the cold condensation from the champagne glasses numbing my fingers.
"The doors are locked, Meilong," Hao’s voice came out not with the warmth he used with me, but with a sharp, chilling edge. "Even if she did, she’s useless. She’s spent the last year signing every document I’ve put in front of her. She’s so blinded by 'love' and 'grief' that she didn't even notice I’ve hollowed out the Li Corporation from the inside."
My world tilted. The champagne bubbles hissed in the silence, sounding like a thousand tiny snakes.
"And her parents?" Meilong’s voice dropped to a whisper. "Was it hard? Making sure the brakes failed on that bridge?"
Silence. A heavy, suffocating silence that confirmed my worst fears.
"It was easier than I thought," Hao finally replied. "The old man was getting suspicious. He had to go. Tomorrow, once Mei signs the final liquidation papers, we’ll let the 'grieving heiress' join them. A tragic su***de to end the Li bloodline."
I felt like I was inhaling shards of glass. My parents... their death wasn't an accident. They were murdered by the man I shared a bed with. Every "I love you" from the past year was a death warrant.
My hands shook so violently the flutes slipped.
CRASH.
The sound of shattering glass felt like my life breaking apart. The door swung open instantly.
Liang Hao stood there, his tie loosened, his eyes narrowing as they landed on me. There was no guilt in his expression only a cold, predatory calculation.
"Mei," he said, his voice flat. "You were always a bit too early for your own good."
Meilong stepped out behind him, adjusting her dress and smirking. "Well, Hao. I guess we don't have to wait until tomorrow after all. The 'su***de' can happen tonight."
I backed away, my chest heaving. "You... you monsters! You killed them!"
Hao didn't deny it. He just took a step toward me, his shadow swallowing me whole. "I didn't steal your life, Mei. You handed it to me. And now, I’m going to make sure you never tell anyone how I took the rest."
I turned to run, but my legs felt like lead. The man I loved was a murderer, and I was his next target
I didn't stay to hear the rest. I turned and bolted.
My heels hammered against the marble, the sound echoing through the North Wing like a frantic heartbeat. I needed to get to the ballroom. I needed to get to the security team, to the cameras anywhere with witnesses.
"Help!" I gasped, my voice thin and brittle. "Someone, help!"
I rounded the corner, nearly colliding with a security guard I recognized. Captain Miller. He had worked for my father for ten years.
"Captain! Call the police!" I grabbed his arm, my fingers digging into the dark fabric of his uniform. "Liang Hao ,he’s insane. He killed my parents. He’s…"
Miller didn't move. He didn't reach for his radio. He just looked down at me with a cold, hollow pity that made my stomach drop through the floor.
"I’m sorry, Mrs. Liang," he said, his voice a flat drone. "But Mr. Liang mentioned you might have a... breakdown tonight. The grief has been hard on you."
I stepped back, my heart stopping. "What?"
"He’s already called a private medical team to take you for an evaluation," Miller continued, stepping forward to block the exit to the ballroom. "It’s for your own safety."
A cold realization washed over me. Hao hadn't just stolen the company. He had bought the people. He had turned my own home into a prison while I was busy mourning.
Footsteps echoed behind me slow, deliberate, and terrifyingly calm. I turned to see Liang Hao and Sun Meilong walking toward me. Meilong was casually sipping from one of the champagne flutes I had dropped.
"There’s nowhere to go, Mei," Hao said. He looked like the perfect gentleman, but his eyes were those of a shark. "The staff, the board, the media, they all know the 'truth.' You’ve been unstable since the accident. Tonight, you finally snapped and tried to sabotage the gala."
"You’re a monster," I hissed, backed against the cold glass of a window.
"I’m a businessman," he corrected. "And in business, liabilities are liquidated."
