Do Low FODMAP Diets Work for Treating Digestive Disorders?

Studies have shown strong links between high FODMAP foods and digestive symptoms like gas, bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation. FODMAPs are types of carbohydrates found in certain foods, including wheat, dairy, onions and beans.

In some individuals (around 20% of the population) FODMAPs are poorly digested, so they end up reaching the colon. They draw water into the intestine and get fermented by hydrogen-producing gut bacteria leading to gas and bloating.

For people who are not necessarily suffering with FODMAP related IBS but still have food allergies. There has been interesting new research on the impact of low FODMAP diets on histamine levels in the gut. High histamine promotes inflammatory immune responses and can promote allergies.

This study showed that individuals with high histamine that followed a low FODMAP diet actually decreased their histamine levels by eight fold.

Histamine Intolerance is characterized by excessive amounts of histamine in the system, and some studies indicate that an excess of histamine can up-regulate the production of a protein called Zonulin which breaks apart the intracellular tight junctions of the gut wall leading to leaky gut.

Those with SNPs in the AOC1 and DAO genes are more likely to have a lower ability to clear histamine due to decreased activity of an enzyme called diamine oxidase.

The fact that low FODMAP diet interventions showed such promise in reducing histamine levels is exciting news for many of us. Particularly if you have the genes associated with impaired histamine clearance.

Feel like you may be suffering from IBS, Chrohns or histamine intolerance? I recommend getting your DNA tested to see if there are any risk factors present in your genetics, so you can learn how to avoid triggers and manage your symptoms better.

Get in touch if you are ready to find out more about your genetic factors and how they may be contributing to your digestive health concerns. I'd love to see you looking and feeling at your best naturally and learning which foods are right for you will help you navigate digestive discomfort and take control of your health.

Are your genes getting you down? The MTHFR gene mutation is very common, as it occurs in 30-40% of the European population.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Maintaining appropriate levels of homocysteine is important in the prevention of chronic diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, Alzheimer’s and autism. Mutations in the MTHFR gene can cause it to be less efficient in converting folate and folic acid to the active form, which in turn leads to elevated levels of homocysteine.

MTHFR MUTATION SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms vary from person to person and from variant to variant. And, more often than not, unless you have testing done, you’ll never become aware of your MTHFR status.
There have been many conditions that have been associated with MTHFR mutations (Particularly at 70% reduced function). Such as:

Depression
Bipolar disorder
Anxiety
Cardiovascular disorders
Chronic pain and fatigue
Migraines
Recurrent miscarriages or babies with neural tube defects in women of child-bearing age
WHAT IS A MTHFR MUTATION?
There are two main MTHFR mutations that researchers focus on most often. These MTHFR mutations are called polymorphisms and are referred to as C677T and A1298C. Mutations can occur on different locations of these genes and be inherited from only one or both parents. Having one mutated allele (a variant form of a given gene) is associated with increased risk of certain health conditions but having two increases the risk further.
For example, C677T indicates that at position 677 within the MTHFR gene, a person can have either a C or a T allele. If a person inherits a T allele from one parent, their MTHFR enzyme will be about 35% less efficient than someone who inherited a C allele from both parents. A person who inherits T alleles from both parents will have an MTHFR enzyme that is about 70% less efficient.

I aim to eat good quality red meat such sirloin or eye filet at least once a week to keep my iron levels up! Red meat eaten once or twice a week, in palm sized portions is part of a healthy balanced diet 🥗💓🍷 but its best to pair it with plenty of high fiber vegetables to aid digestion!...so no I'm not a vegan for all those who were wondering 😂

Have you ever tried canned mackerel? If not I suggest you do...especially if you like fish. Canned Mackerel is healthier than canned Tuna, because it is higher in healthy omega 3 fatty acids and has much lower levels of mercury. Which is a dangerous heavy metal pollutant in our oceans. Mercury toxicity can occurr from eating too much Tuna and other predatory seafood like Shark and Hapuka. The general rule of thumb is the smaller the fish the less Mercury it will have.

I personally love eating mackerel on salads for a quick and easy lunch! Hope you will too! The John West Mackerel is my favourite as it is wild caught from Scotland, so less likely to have antibiotics and all the other nasties from commercially farmed fish. And you can find it at Pak N Save!

I just made my first loaf of gluten free Chickpea bread.... and I'll definitely be making it again it is yummy! So easy to whip up. Takes 15min to prepare and 40min in the oven.

I love that Chickpea flour is a nutritious and inexpensive flour. It is high in protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals which provide many health benefits! Not to mention its has less calories than regular wheat flour and a higher antioxidant and mineral content.

Temaki sushi or cone sushi is my favourite because it is easy to make and uses a lot of Nori (dried seaweed sheets)

Seaweed is incredibly nutrient dense with 10 times more calcium per gram than dairy products... along with a big dose of iodine and tyrosine for healthy thyroid function. It is also high in fiber, minerals and has all essential amino acids so it helps to keep you satisfied and fights off cravings.

In addition to containing the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, seaweed boasts a wide variety of beneficial plant compounds, including flavonoids and carotenoids. These have been shown to protect your body’s cells from free radical damage and cancer. I absolutely recommend getting more of this fabulous sea vegetable in your diet. Whether it is through sushi, miso soup or seaweed salads 🥗 your body will love you for it! Especially your skin and hair!
