Case for the day: DEXTROCARDIA

Dextrocardia a rare, congenital condition where in heart is positioned on the right side of the chest instead of the left. Basically a mirror image of the normal heart position.

On its own, dextrocardia is not serious. It does not cause symptoms or complications. And it doesn’t need treatment. But many people with dextrocardia are also born with other conditions. And those conditions may cause problems that need medical attention.

Symptoms that require medical attention include:

-unexplained and continual exhaustion
-inability to gain weight
-chronic infections, especially of the sinus and lungs
-difficulty breathing
-jaundiced or yellowed skin
-blue-tinted skin, especially around the fingers and toes

Dextrocardia is rare. It occurs in about 1 in every 12,000 pregnancies

It is usually diagnosed via imaging, like chest xray or CT scan

Dextrocardia generally has a normal life expectancy, especially in cases of isolated dextrocardia or situs inversus totalis where the heart is otherwise structurally normal. The long-term prognosis is determined by the severity of associated congenital heart defects or organ abnormalities, which can reduce life expectancy if severe.

Saw a patient at the clinic presenting with headache, difficulty sleeping, dizziness and burry vision, naUsea, vomiting and anxiety after taking a couple of medicines which he saw on tiktok promoted by a non medical person/ vlogger as WEIGHT GAIN PROMOTER.

It was later found out that it was DEXAMETHASONE.

FYI, dexamethasone is a STEROID used for a variety of medical condions that should be strictly monitored by medical practitioners. Taking this drug for prolonged period, you are more likely to experience LONG-TERM side effects that may include WEIGHT GAIN, WEAKER BONES and a HIGHER RISK OF INFECTION

So PLEASE, do not take this drug. It is unregistered and NOT SAFE
