Birds with this much white are rare and valuable, especially when the pattern is neat and symmetrical like this.

The small red marking on the head shows it's still a goldfinch, but the mutation suppresses most of the mask.

This image shows different color mutations of European Goldfinches (Chardonnerets). Breeders have developed many mutations through selective breeding, each affecting the bird’s melanin (dark pigments) and lipchromes (yellow/red pigments). Below is a clear explanation of each mutation shown in the image:

---

🔹 Top Row

Panachure

A pied/patchy mutation. The bird shows irregular white or diluted patches.

Phaeo

Melanin is strongly reduced except for brown eumelanin. Result: warm brown and beige tones.

Jaune (Yellow)

Increased yellow pigmentation; melanin is reduced in some areas.

Opale

Melanin is diluted and appears “smoky” or grayish. The bird looks pale with a pearly effect.

---

🔹 Second Row

Isabelle

Strong reduction of eumelanin and partial reduction of phaeomelanin → beige and light brown.

Agate

Mutation that reduces eumelanin but preserves pattern lines, giving a grayish-blue back and clear wing bars.

Brune (Brown)

Black eumelanin is converted to brown → warm chocolate coloration.

Satiné

Very strong reduction of melanin → extremely light bird with reddish eyes.

---

🔹 Third Row

Pastel

Softened or diluted melanin → pastel grey, lighter body.

Noire (Black)

Enhanced eumelanin → darker appearance, more black tones.

Aminet

A mutation producing an overall very light and diluted look (similar to dilute but with specific patterns).

Tête Blanche (White Head)

Localized mutation causing the head to lack pigmentation → white head.

---

🔹 Last Row

Perlato

A mutation giving a pearly, speckled appearance, with diluted melanin.

Lutino

Absence of dark melanin + strong lipchrome. Result: yellow and white bird with red eyes.

Albino

Complete lack of both melanin and lipchrome → fully white with red eyes.

Classique (Classic)

This is the wild-type European Goldfinch, with normal natural coloration.

---

📌 Summary

These are all color mutations—not species. Breeders analyze combinations of:

Eumelanin (black/grey pigment)

Phaeomelanin (brown pigment)

Lipchrome pigments (yellow/red)

Pattern genes

…to produce these varieties.
