Yesterday’s Mum Matters event by FemmeFinance Sg was a lovely and meaningful morning for women in so many different seasons of life. 🌸

I shared a little about my own journey with mood scents as a mother, and how scent, calmness and routine became intertwined for me over the years.

We also heard from an incredibly inspiring mother of 9, who runs her own massage wellness business - and truly, her humour, youthfulness and radiance reflected the way she cares for women so intentionally. Dr Tan Shu Qi’s sharing was equally eye-opening, especially the reminder that PCOS is now more accurately understood as PMOS; not merely a cystic condition but something deeply tied to metabolism, hormones, insulin resistance, stress, weight, sleep and overall women’s health. It really highlighted how many matters a woman quietly carries within her body at once.

Some of you have been doing this with me for years now, and some go quietly. And then there are some whose names become so familiar to me, I can already picture the scents they would naturally gravitate towards before they even place their next order. Sis Fadillah is one of them.

One of the most awkward things about working closely with people is this: sometimes they become known for their (not so good) smell before people truly know them for their work.

And the difficult part is… many genuinely do not realise it.

We adapt very quickly to familiar scents, including our own body odour. Which means a person may step into meetings, carpools, brainstorming sessions or project discussions completely unaware that others have already noticed something unpleasant.

Of course, nobody says anything. 🥴

Maybe 80–90% of colleagues will simply tolerate it politely, then mention it later to someone else.

And perhaps only a very small handful would approach the matter kindly. Quietly. Gently. Maybe with a subtle suggestion, a deodorant recommendation, or even a thoughtful perfume gift.

As much as we put effort into dressing appropriately, speaking confidently and doing our work well, it also matters that people feel comfortable being around us for hours.

But this also doesn’t mean drowning yourself in perfume.

A beautiful scent should stay close. Calm. Soft. Discoverable only within your personal space. Especially in classrooms, studios and shared environments where strong scents can become overstimulating for others.

Truthfully, the most elegant women I’ve met did not smell loudly fragranced at all. They simply smelled clean.

Fresh outfit. Washed hair (yes girl, we will know after leaning in for a cheek kiss hehe). Subtle florals. A faint trace of something comforting lingering on their shawl or sleeves after a hug. Just soft, pleasant and lovely to be around.

And if you ever need to approach someone about her 'smell', do it with adab. Never make her a joke in a group chat or lunch conversation. Speak privately. Be gentle. Assume she genuinely doesn't know. It can also be as kind as: “I love this roll-on mood scent and thought you might enjoy it for work or daily use too.”

These few rainy days have made me slow down a little more at home. The kind of weather that makes the sofa feel extra inviting and warm drinks somehow taste so good after Maghrib.

White Tea scents are interesting.

Two blends carrying the same name can smell completely different from one another.
