Today marks exactly one year since the trial of suspended First Vice President Riek Machar and seven co-accused over the Nasir incident began before a Special Court in Juba.

The three-judge court was established by Chief Justice Benjamin Bak Deng to hear the case arising from deadly clashes in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, in March 2025.

Machar and his co-accused face charges including murder, treason, conspiracy, terrorism and crimes against humanity. They have denied the charges.

Over the past year, the court has heard prosecution and defence witnesses and considered legal challenges over its jurisdiction, presidential immunity and other issues. By September 11 this year, the Special Court had held 115 sessions.
