In the year of his death, Valery Lobanovsky gave two large press conferences, not related to specific matches. Twice in 2002, the Master initiated communication with journalists - in early January it happened in the conference hall of the Dynamo stadium, and in March at the club base in Koncha-Zaspa.
These were serious conversations in their content, for which the Dynamo coach had thoroughly prepared. According to eyewitnesses, Valery Vasilyevich never allowed himself such communication with the press without serious preliminary work: the figures, facts and arguments of the Master were carefully prepared.
“A coach must learn all his life. If you become stale and stop studying, it means that you have ceased to be a coach ”- this was the opinion of the most successful coach in the history of Dynamo.
Communication with Lobanovsky was like a university lecture of the highest level. Valery Vasilyevich did not just answer questions, he passed on his knowledge and experience to journalists and fans. How such an approach is now lacking!

“First of all, I want to apologize for being late - we had a training session and I had to attend it. Secondly, I am without a tie, but for the same reason - only with the training of the team, ”Lobanovskiy began the conversation.
We are people of the Soviet era and we are used to the concept of the "five-year plan". It has already been 5 years since I have been working in the Dynamo club again. So, we have fulfilled this "five-year plan", I want to emphasize, have fulfilled on average. Over the past year, everyone understands this - players, coaches, management, we could have performed better.
But, unfortunately, we did not do what you expected from us. There were various reasons for this. While resting, I had the opportunity to read the press. What is being written now is especially important. I was interested in what kind of assessment we are given by this or that publication. Some criticized harshly, others were softer, some called it a failure, others said “they didn’t achieve the result” ... The form of criticism is exclusively a matter of ethics.

Under the occupation regime that prevailed in Kyiv, every footballer had to get a job in order to survive and not be accused of sabotage. Short worked as a cook in the dining room, Putistin got a job there as a master. Vasily Sukharev worked on the railway. Chernega went to work in the protection of the City Law, Gundarev, Golimbievsky, Alexander Tkachenko and Georgy Timofeev joined the police. The director of the Kyiv bakery, Josef Kordyk, a Czech prisoner of war of the former Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War, took care of the sport out of personal commitment. It was he who gave work at the bakery № 1 to famous pre-war Ukrainian athletes: boxers Trofimov, Turovtsev, Chervinsky, gymnasts Ganin, Eme, Shinkarenko, swimmers Mykhaylenko, Salopin worked here. He also invited footballer M. Trusevych to work here, followed by seven other Dynamo players: Sviridovsky, Kuzmenko, Klymenko, Makar Goncharenko, Putistin, Tyutchev, Komarov and Volodymyr Balakin, who played for Lokomotiv before the war.

On June 22, 1941, Germany attacked the USSR. With the start of the war, most players were drafted into the Red Army, the People's Militia and fighter battalions. On July 1, the evacuation from Kyiv began. But the Dynamo players, who were subject to conscription, remained in the city. The coach of the team Mykhailo Butusov and the former captain of the team Konstantin Shchegotsky tried to persuade the head of the Kyiv NKVD Lev Varnavsky (real name Vornovitsky) to send not only newcomers from Western Ukraine, but also all other members of the team. Varnavsky saw this as cowardice and refused to help with the evacuation.
During the initial period of the war, the German command released Ukrainians from captivity. Thus, Mykhailo Sviridovsky, Fedir Tyutchev, Mykhailo Putistin, Mykola Korotkykh, Mykola Holimbievsky, Lev Gundarev, Ivan Kuzmenko, Oleksiy Klymenko, Pavlo Komarov, Yuriy Chernega, Oleksandr Tkachenko and Mykhailo Melnyk returned from captivity. In addition, at the beginning of the war, Mykola Trusevych enlisted in the People's Militia, fought as a battalion spy, but was wounded and could not get out of the encirclement, so he also returned to occupied Kyiv.

However, until the Second World War, Kyivans did not achieve any achievements. In 1939, after the annexation of Poland, many new players moved from the occupied regions to the club, in particular the most famous were Oleksandr Skocen, Mykhailo Matias, Kazimierz Gurski and Oleg Lajewski.
Also during this period, "Dynamo" took part in the draws of the Cup of the Ukrainian SSR, winning this trophy in 1936, 1937 and 1938

In 1936, the USSR decided to create a single team championship instead of a large number of different multi-level tournaments. The strongest team of the Ukrainian SSR at that time was Dynamo (Kyiv). The debut in the championship took place in Kiev on May 24, 1936, when the Moscow "Dynamo" defeated the hosts with a score of 5: 1. The only goal of striker Mykola Makhina was the first goal for the Ukrainian club in the championships of the Soviet Union. After that, Dynamo (Kyiv) tried to catch up with the Muscovites, but failed. The only Ukrainian team in the single-round debut championship of the USSR finished the tournament in second place. Local fans perceived this performance as an unconditional success.

On September 14, 1929, Dynamo played its first international match against the working-class team of Lower Austria, Deutsch Wagram, losing 3: 4. In 1935, the players of Dynamo as part of the national team of Ukraine made a trip to France and Belgium, where in a friendly game they defeated the four-time winner of the French Cup "Red Star" with a score of 6: 1. Until 1936, the only championship of the Soviet Union was not held. Kievans gained experience in games for the championship of the sports society "Dynamo". There they won over Dynamo from Odessa and Kharkiv. The Kyiv team was clearly the strongest in the Ukrainian SSR, but it has not yet reached the level of skill of Moscow's Dynamo. For example, in the final of the Dynamo championship in 1933, the Muscovites defeated Kyiv with a score of 2: 1.
