Danish is the only official language of Denmark, and is a part of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages. It is closely related to Swedish and Norwegian. It is spoken throughout the country, although a small part of the population living on the border with Germany also speaks German. Many Danes also speak English well, especially those living in larger cities and young people who study English in school.

The etymology of the toponym "Denmark" is currently not precisely clarified and remains the subject of scholarly debate; sources from the 5th-6th centuries mention the ancient Germanic tribe of Danes, who lived on the Jutland Peninsula.
