The semispinalis capitis (SC) is probably the most important muscle in the back of the neck!

But many therapists do not appreciate it.
I like to call under-appreciated muscles, “Rodney Dangerfield muscles”. 😆😆
I know… very old reference 🙄

First, the SC is the biggest/thickest muscle in the posterior cervicocranial region (back of the neck 😊).

But few people realize this because it is deep to the upper trapezius. And when the SC is tight, it is often blamed on the upper trap. But the upper trap in the middle to upper neck is simply not a very important muscle. It is very narrow and very thin (most of the upper trap that is important is at the top of the shoulder).
Or, a tight SC is blamed on the erector spinse musculature. But there is very little erector spinae in the neck, and the little there is is the longissimus capitis, which is way out lateral, running to the mastoid process of the temporal bone.

Start carefully palpating your clients’ tight necks and I believe you will find that SC is often the culprit 👍🏽

Note… please start palpating and working far medial, right against the spinous processes, over the laminar groove. That is where most of the tightness is usually located. ✅✅
