I’ve seen too many assessments & IEP’s that just are *not* acceptable. Unless and until Educators, Administrators, and Medical Professionals are both NEURODIVERGENT-INFORMED *and* TRAUMA-INFORMED, the *WHOLE* child is not being acknowledged, considered, or supported.
Did you know that phenotypic behavior of Trauma and Stressor DOs often mirror how neurobehavioral DOs present?
Misdiagnosis is entirely too commonplace and that’s just not ok. Sensory seeking *and* aversion are adaptive measures that both sets of populations use to regulate the nervous system and even assist with various executive functioning tasks. Sensorimotor activity is often crucial to overall functioning as is verbalized explicit cognition. When viewed from an antiquated and uninformed lens, these mechanisms are seen as behavioral misconduct. Unless the “system” makes it a requirement for those who are teaching, and even advocating for these students, to be both *neurodivergent & trauma informed* these students are not receiving support for the “whole of their needs” and cannot thrive.
