The market is in Bo Zhou, Anhui. The majority of the TCM herbs / herbal tea that you can get from Chinatown and TCM pharmacies around the world come from here.

Vendors bring herbs from all across China to here to trade. Even though their main business is wholesale, they are surprisingly nice and patient when you ask questions. However, most of them don’t know a thing about TCM. They are just here to sell. A few vendors I’ve talked to are significantly more knowledgeable with their herbs and I learnt a lot from them! Half of them take naps in the afternoons so definitely go early in the morning (in the video, it was the afternoon and many shops were closed already).

Bo Zhou herbs were once known to be “low quality”. There were fake herbs, herbs with heavy metals etc. The good news is that the government has been really cracking down on those vendors for the past decade. Now (from what I heard and what I saw), you can trust the herbs there. You won’t be able to find organic herbs there, but you can certainly find some great quality farmed / wild herbs. All vendors let me take samples of their herbs for testing purposes before ordering their herbs. Again, you get what you ask for. If you know what you are looking for and ask the right questions, you will get great herbs here!
