New on MAAGO Circle | The Many Lives of Tradition
Growing up in Ghana, there were things we did without giving much thought to whether they were traditions. They were simply part of how we lived.
As our lives change, so do some of these familiar practices.
In this week’s MAAGO Circle, I reflect on my mother’s hospitality, the changing customs surrounding Ghanaian marriage, the wider significance of Kente, and my evolving relationship with shea butter.
All of these raise an interesting question: When traditions evolve, how do we know whether we are preserving their meaning or gradually losing what made them significant?
I’d love for you to read this week’s reflection and join the conversation.

The Many Lives of Tradition | MAAGO Circle
Some traditions remain as we remember them. Others evolve, finding new meaning across generations and communities.
From my mother’s hospitality growing up in Ghana to customary marriage, Kente, and shea butter, this week’s MAAGO Circle explores the different ways traditions continue to shape our lives.
But when we change how a tradition is practiced, are we helping it endure or losing something essential along the way?
This Sunday’s journal is now live.

A tradition stays alive through the attention we continue to give it.
Today’s MAAGO Circle journal opens October’s theme, The Ritual of Keeping.
I reflect on a gathering I witnessed where my father and uncles committed to meeting each month—to pray, share a meal, check in, and consider ways to move their village forward.
Their commitment made me think about how we give what matters a meaningful place in our lives. That same intention shapes MAAGO: carrying Ghanaian shea butter heritage forward through everyday care.
What is something you treasure from your upbringing, and how do you keep it alive today?

What We Keep Alive — AGOLIMITED.COM A gathering with my father and uncles reminded me that the connections we treasure need our continued care. As we begin The Ritual of Keeping, I reflect on the practices we carry from home, the ways they grow with us, and the grace we give one another as tradition and modern life meet.
What we treasure deserves our attention.
Today’s MAAGO Circle journal opens The Ritual of Keeping—October’s reflection on the relationships, traditions, and care we keep alive.

Rooted in ritual. Made for today.
Before the blends, before the jars, there is shea.
Every product in the MAAGO family begins with Ghanaian shea butter.
For generations, shea has been part of everyday care in Ghana—used simply, practically and passed through communities and families. MAAGO carries that tradition forward rather than leaving it behind in the name of modern self-care.
Some of our shea remains closer to its raw, unrefined form. Some becomes the foundation for our whipped collections, where tradition continues in a form created for the rhythms of life today.
Different expressions. Different rituals. The same root.
This is the relationship MAAGO is building between tradition and modernity—not one replacing the other, but one continuing through the other.

Before the blends, before the jars, there is shea.
At the heart of the MAAGO family is Ghanaian shea butter—a tradition that existed long before MAAGO did.
At MAAGO, we don’t leave that tradition behind to create something “modern.” We carry it with us.
Whipped into our collections or kept closer to its raw, unrefined form, shea remains the foundation.
The products may take different forms.
The rituals may look different.
The root remains the same.
