They don’t teach this in schools. Julian Francis Abele was born in Philadelphia in 1881, the youngest of eight children. He attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Architecture, where he graduated in 1902 as the first Black person to earn an architecture degree from Penn. He later studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and joined Horace Trumbauer’s firm, becoming its chief designer in 1909. Abele contributed to more than 400 buildings, including Harvard’s Widener Library, Philadelphia’s Central Library, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He was the primary designer of Duke University’s West Campus, including the Gothic Chapel, library, medical school, hospital, and gymnasium. Yet his name did not appear on official drawings during Trumbauer’s lifetime. He once said, “The lines are all Mr. Trumbauer’s, but the shadows are all mine.” Because Durham hotels barred Black guests, Abele declined to visit the campus he designed. He was admitted to the American Institute of Architects in 1942. Decades later, his legacy was finally recognized: Duke commissioned his portrait in 1987, Philadelphia honored him with a historical marker, and in 2016 Duke named its central quadrangle Abele Quad.
