we know ultra processed foods aren’t good for you—but why? think of it this way: UPFs replace high nutrient foods with foods low in nutritional content that trigger a cascade of effects detrimental to your health. ultra-processed foods are characterized by:- industrial processing methods - inclusion of additives designed to extend shelf life - inclusion of additives to enhance palatability the additives to enhance palatability are usually sodium and added sugars, which alter the composition of your gut microbiome and keep you addicted to these types of foods. you can also characterize UPFs by what they don’t have: fiber. they’re typically low in fiber but high calorie, high fat, and high sugar content. all components that can lead to a generalized state of inflammation in the body. fiber is important because it keeps your blood sugar stable and it feeds the microbes in your gut that are responsible for immunological functions, digestive health, mental health, and more. so does this mean you can’t enjoy a diet coke and toasted square cheese crackers from time to time? no. but make it your duty to be eating enough fiber throughout the day to combat some of the effects of eating foods high in sugar and saturated fats.
san francisco is suing 10 ultra-processed food companies. the lawsuit argues that cities and counties have been burdened with the costs of treating diseases that stem from the companies’ products.this goes beyond just san francisco though. it has been reported that chronic health conditions impose a massive economic burden on the entire country, accounting for approximately 90% of the $4.9 trillion in annual health care expenditures in the U.S. in 2016 alone, health care spending on chronic conditions topped $1 trillion, the equivalent to 6% of the US GDP. sadly, 70 percent of the american food supply and grocery store shelves are now comprised of ultra-processed foods. and if you think ultra-processed foods are limited to just chips and snack cakes, ultra-processed foods also include things like store bought granola, flavored yogurt, protein bars, microwaveable popcorn, and deli meat. the reason these foods are so detrimental to public health is because they are major contributors to chronic diseases. several studies have linked these foods to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. but it’s lesser know how wide the spectrum of chronic health diseases is. it also includes cancer, PCOS, hormonal acne, and neurodegenerative diseases like alzheimer’s and parkinson’s and psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety. if you want to put yourself less at risk for developing chronic health conditions, cut back on processed foods and increase your intake of fiber.
i accidentally took myself to therapy in doing a no buy quarter by mapping out what my internal motivations were for spending money.one of those motivations was that i was feeling this unspoken pressure to spend money as a right of passage. it felt like because i could spend money, i should spend money. i was subconsciousl using my purchasing power as a type of status symbol. but what you don’t realize is that when you’re in a constant state of consumption, then you eventually become numb to those behaviors and rewards and consequently desensitize your dopamine levels. so in order to feel that same rush of satisfaction, you get trapped into this dopamine hamster wheel to feel the thrill you once felt. and you get trapped into inconstantly chasing the next purchase to feel more complete. my other big awakening was that i was spending money as a way to feel good enough or ready enough. i felt like once i acquired enough things or experiences i could claim to be legitimate enough or happy enough or successful enough. as far as the mentalities that moved me closer to my goal of spending no money on non-essentials, these are the main two beliefs i wanted to adopt and reinforce to help me stay accountable.the biggest realization here is that having savings means you have options and when you have options it means you have freedom. it’s the reason i walked away from a corporate career with no plan in mind and stayed off the grid for literally years.the last mentality that i wanted to reinforce is that time is literally money. everything comes into your possession through a bater with your time. or as the swedish say: “he who buys not what he needs, steals from himself.” let me know how you’re staying accountable to a no-buy quarter. i’ll do a part II on the upper quadrants that outline behaviors next.
