Marshawn Kneeland | chronic traumatic encephalopathy
The family of former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has released the results of his post-mortem brain tissue analysis, revealing that the 24-year-old was suffering from early-stage Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) at the time of his death.
The analysis was conducted by researchers at the Boston University CTE Center in collaboration with the Concussion & CTE Foundation. They confirmed Kneeland was in Stage 1 (of 4) of the degenerative brain disease, which is caused by repeated head impacts rather than isolated concussions.
Dr. Ann McKee, director of the BU CTE Center, noted that she was sadly unsurprised by the findings, stating that the progressive disease has been found in nearly half of the deceased contact-sport athletes they have studied under the age of 30. Doctors and advocates emphasized that Kneeland's diagnosis in the modern era proves advanced helmets and standard concussion protocols do not prevent CTE, as the damage accumulates from routine sub-concussive hits. Kneeland had played tackle football since he was 7 years old.
Cyclospora parasite outbreak
An alarming, rapidly expanding Cyclospora parasite outbreak has sickened nearly 900 people across 18 states. Dubbed the "explosive diarrhea parasite" by media due to its hallmark symptom, the infection count is spiking drastically, particularly in Michigan (reporting over 670 cases) and Ohio (reporting 177 cases).
The CDC and FDA are actively investigating the seasonal surge, which traditionally peaks between May and August.
What is the Parasite?
The illness, called cyclosporiasis, is caused by a microscopic, single-celled parasite named Cyclospora cayetanensis. It infects the small intestine.
How it spreads: The parasite is transmitted when people consume food or water contaminated with human f***s (often through sewage-exposed agricultural water).
No person-to-person spread: Unlike a stomach flu, you cannot catch it directly from an infected person. Once the parasite leaves the body, it requires days to weeks in the environment to mature before it becomes infectious.

The Rising Threat of the Powassan Virus
Powassan virus is a rare but highly severe tick-borne flavivirus capable of causing dangerous neurological diseases. First identified in 1958 in Powassan, Ontario, it has emerged as a growing public health concern across North America. While the virus has historically been uncommon, cases have sharply risen in recent years. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. cases hit an all-time high of 76 in 2025, more than tripling the numbers seen just a few years prior.
The virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks, primarily the blacklegged (deer) tick, the groundhog tick, and the squirrel tick. What makes Powassan exceptionally dangerous compared to other tick-borne pathogens like Lyme disease is its transmission speed. While Lyme bacteria typically require a tick to feed for 24 to 48 hours, the Powassan virus can be transmitted into a human host’s bloodstream in as little as 15 minutes after attachment.
Many individuals infected with Powassan remain asymptomatic. However, those who do develop symptoms initially experience flu-like warning signs, such as fever, severe headaches, vomiting, and generalized muscle weakness. If the virus breaches the central nervous system, it leads to severe, neuroinvasive conditions like encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes shielding the brain and spinal cord). Advanced symptoms include confusion, loss of physical coordination, seizures, and acute paralysis. Approximately 10% of these neuroinvasive cases prove fatal, and roughly half of all survivors suffer permanent neurological damage, including chronic memory problems, speech difficulties, and a lasting loss of muscle mass.
Currently, there are no specific vaccines, antiviral medications, or target treatments available to cure Powassan virus. Medical management relies entirely on supportive clinical care, which can include hospitalization, intravenous fluids, and respiratory support for severe cases. Because of this, public health experts emphasize rigorous prevention. Minimizing risk involves wearing long sleeves, using EPA-registered insect repellents, avoiding high-brush areas, and conducting meticulous, immediate tick checks after spending time outdoors.
