Unwound Hounds Animal Massage

Things that may happen during a massage and for which apologies aren't necessary:

▶️ Fur flying everywhere: Massage involves running my hands over their fur, often "against the grain," and using my fingers to lift and push the superficial tissues in various directions. This process will naturally result in loose fur becoming dislodged, which is actually beneficial for overall skin and coat health!

▶️ Passing gas: Massage helps engage the parasympathetic nervous system, which supports relaxation and digestion (among other things). Along with simply being in a more restful state, focused massage to release areas of tension or restriction around the back and abdomen can often lead your pup to let out a little flatulence. Sometimes paralyzed pups will let out a little bit more than gas, but never fear, this is all good and tells me that they're responding positively!

▶️ Restlessness: Massage can be a lot to process for some pups, especially the younger ones and those new to massage. The stimuli of being touched or handled by a stranger can cause some pups to be over-aroused and excitable. Most dogs do well when given frequent breaks and will find it easier to settle in after one or two sessions. We can't force our animals to relax, but we can encourage it with regular practice and a bit of patience.
