IT’S TRAVEL DAAAAYY!! 🚊✈️

All of the Miss Black USA contestants are traveling from their home states over the span of today and tomorrow to Washington, D.C., and I am super duper excited to meet all of these lovely young ladies and women who are part of this organization!

I have decided to take a 2-day-long train ride from Mississippi to D.C., and that gives me the chance to wind down, relax, breathe, and think before a week full of experiences and memories! ✨

No super cute travel pics today—just me, my luggage, and my comfy clothing against a 43-hour train ride—my longest train ride to date! Wish me luck! 🍀💞

Part Two: The Oreo Twins! 🐶

As time passed, their coats looked fuller, their spirits were high, and they were visibly thriving! It was finally time to send them off to a bigger organization that could handle their continued care and increase their chances of adoption. So we made the drive—an hour and a half later, we were supposed to leave them in trusted hands. But somehow, we didn’t leave empty-handed. 🙃

Brownie (later renamed Twix) and Oreo came right back home with me for a little while longer, and I didn’t mind one bit. A little later, Oreo was cleared to go to BARL instead, and not long after, she found her furever family! I was so proud of her and so sad to see her go at the same time.

Twix, on the other hand, had a bit of a delay. Unfortunately, while playing with my dog Kalei, she got a cut from Kalei’s nails. Yes, it was an unexpected expense (an expensive expense at that). But truthfully? I enjoyed having that extra bonding time with her. She and her sister were truly some of the sweetest girls I’ve ever had.

Eventually, she was cleared, transported to BARL, and not long after, she too found her person! ❤️

This is what rescue is to me:
Saving lives. Fostering them back to health. Sacrificing time, energy, and money. Building community and saving communities. And loving every single second of it.

Part One: The Oreo Twins! 🐶

On May 24th, 2024, my partner FaceTimed me showing me the package the Dog Distribution System had just dropped off at her house—two very smol puppies trying to find a cool place to crash from the extreme heat we were experiencing. In less than 20 minutes, I was there to rescue them from the killer weather, starvation, fleas, and what seemed to be skin issues already setting in.

As soon as I got to them, I gave them everything I could in that moment—lots of love, food, water, and a much-needed bath before bringing them back home with me. This was technically my first real rescue, and at the time, I thought I’d be taking them to a shelter soon after, but the only shelter available was a kill shelter that confirmed they'd be euthanized simply because they appeared to be mixed with a pit or bully breed. Yeah… that wasn’t happening on my watch.

So, I fostered them myself for a few months until I found BARL and began a life-long connection with them! I knew taking them to BARL would give them a better shot at life!

During that time, I noticed their fur started to get more patchy by the day. They were constantly scratching, and even had blood in their p**p. I knew something was wrong. I started reaching out, raising money, and asking for help. Thankfully, a sweet woman stepped in and offered to pay for one of their vaccinations (a blessing—that’s already half the bill covered!). I also received my first physical donation ever—a bag of food—and I couldn’t have been more grateful for the outpour of community support for these babies and my brand new organization at that time!

At the vet, we found out they had Demodicosis which is essentially an overgrowth of mites eating at their skin due to a weaker immune system. But after some TLC, immune support, and love from the community, these babies started to thrive. Their fur started growing back, they were itching less, and their personalities were shining through! ✨

Let’s start with little LeRoy! 💛

After a long volunteer meeting at BAC, I stepped outside and was instantly met by the sweetest surprise—this gorgeous fellow. He walked right up to me when I called, and the moment I started petting him, he melted into my hands. Honestly, I don’t know who folded first—him or me—because from that second on, I was ready to take him home! 🤣

But all jokes (truths) aside, it was nearly 8:00 PM during daylight savings; Leaving him outside alone just isn’t me—not when I had the chance to get him somewhere safe. Once we made it home, I fell for him even more. I’d never had the “orange cat experience” before, but little LeRoy made it clear that his personality was nothing short of unforgettable.

From ninja-jumping into cabinets without knocking over a single dish, to bonding with the chillest of the household dogs, to insisting on being petted then demanding personal space on his own time, to pulling me in close for bedtime snuggles, to even enjoying car rides and leashed walks—every moment of fostering LeRoy was pure joy! 🥹

Oh, and his name? That was playfully assigned by my mom. I told her he was a kitten (because I really thought he was), but when she saw him, she said, “That’s a grown man,” and immediately started calling him LeRoy🤣. What was supposed to be just one night before dropping him off at the shelter turned into the purr-fect 15-day journey.

On April 30th, LeRoy was officially adopted into his furever home with a loving parent and a canine companion! While letting him go was incredibly hard (hard enough to almost cry), I couldn’t be more grateful that he found his person—and they found him.

What’s so special about this foster is that he’s not only my first foster cat since founding It’z Pawsible!, but he’s also the first pet that I’ve directly rehomed! Direct options are typically limited to ensure the safety of both the pets and adopters, but this time, I felt that LeRoy’s adopter was the perfect match! We love a happy ending! 🥹✨

‼️Mississippi is Number 1… and that’s not a good thing. The top 5 states for heartworm incidence are Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Alabama. These stats come from the American Heartworm Society. Talk to a vet about heartworm prevention TODAY!!!

MOSQUITOES ARE THE CARRIERS. Mississippi has lot of mosquitoes.🦟 🦟 If your dog isn’t on Heartworm prevention, there is a good chance they will become infected, if they aren’t already. This can KILL your dog. It is PREVENTABLE.

BARL treats heartworm positive dogs that we take in. This is costly, but extremely important. It saves lives and gives mosquitoes one less dog to bite to carry the disease to other pets.
