Today, on World Pride Day, we’re incredibly proud to welcome Tomas Salem Tomás Salem to the Utu Outdoor Lovers community.

Tomas is a solo sailor, mountain guide, social anthropologist, storyteller, and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, currently sailing alone around the world in search of something bigger than miles sailed.

His journey asks questions that resonate deeply with us: What does it mean to live well? How do we reconnect with nature, with each other, and with ourselves? And how do we build a life defined not by status, but by joy, curiosity, community, and freedom?

As q***r founders of Utu, we’ve always believed the outdoors should be exactly that—a place of solace, equality, healing, and connection. A place where everyone belongs.

Growing up between Patagonia and Norway, Tomas was shaped by the idea that nature belongs to everyone. It’s a belief that has guided his life, and one that sits at the heart of everything we build at Utu.

Over the coming months, we’ll be following Tomas as he continues his solo voyage across the Pacific, sharing the people, places, and stories he encounters along the way.

Today, the sun stands still.

The Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year - a celestial turning point that humans have celebrated for thousands of years.

In the remote desert of northwestern Utah, artist Nancy Holt created one of the modern world’s most extraordinary monuments to this moment: Sun Tunnels.
Completed in 1976, the work consists of four massive concrete cylinders aligned with the rising and setting sun on the summer and winter solstices. For a brief window each year, sunlight passes through the tunnels in near-perfect alignment, transforming the desert into a living observatory.

Holt believed art could help us become more aware of our relationship to time, place, and the universe. “I wanted to bring the vast space of the desert back to human scale,” she said.

Standing inside the tunnels, the horizon is framed, the sky feels closer, and the movement of the sun becomes impossible to ignore.
A reminder that before clocks and calendars, there was the sky.
