Aspririn- An everyday painkiller, but how much do we know about it?

Many people’s first reaction to aches and pains (such as headache), is to go to their medicine cabinet and check what remedy it offers. In their search for relief, aspirin is one of the most taken OTC (Over-the-Counter) drugs worldwide.

But how much do we know about the origins of this popular drug?

There are some surprising facts: already the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians used something similar to aspirin. They simply used the willow bark, which contains salicin. This agent has similar pain relief effects on the human body as aspirin.

The willow tree can be found in ancient Celtic mythology. The willow is still part of today's Celtic tree horoscop.

The druids considered the willow tree to be highly sacred and used parts of the trees for healing. The Celtic druids linked the sacred tree to poetics and witchcraft. From willow, the two words “witchcraft” and “wicca” derived.

Aspirin is another example where modern medicine met with ancient wisdom.
