ognition that objects are produced and live their lives within cultural contexts. Our current research uses the lamp as a typological skeleton for fleshing out ideas about materiality and process, as we experiment with paper, polymer resin, aluminum, fabric, and porcelain. Our lighting design involves multiple stages of prototyping using hand and CAD sketches that become cut files that are used to hand‐build full scale models. We use waterjet, laser, and knife cutters as fabrication tools to cut and perforate metal or plastic parts that are then hand‐folded and fastened or sewn. The conversation between manual and digital is an important part of our process; while digital methods allow impressive levels of complexity and precision, a sole reliance on them leads to a loss of intuition. Hand sketching and hand cutting allow for the productive power of serendipity or what we like to call “unintentional marks.”
