The more I learned, the more horrified I became. These creams didn’t just mask the problem; they often made it worse, stunting the skin’s natural growth and leading to the dreaded Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)—a severe reaction that
occurs when these creams are stopped after prolonged use. I needed something better—something that wouldn’t just treat their skin, but would nurture, moisturize, and soothe it. I thought back to the wisdom of my grandmother and the generations of African traditions she embodied. She always had a remedy for every ailment—a potion, a salve, a concoction she whipped up with ingredients from the earth. Her ‘old wives' remedies’ were legendary in our family, though we never knew exactly what they were called. Inspired by her example, I embarked on a mission to create natural, effective solutions that would truly moisturize and soothe my family’s skin. In 2014, I created my first batch of body butter right in my kitchen, using Shea butter, nutrient-rich oils, and essential oils—pure, natural ingredients I could trust. The results were more than I could have hoped for. My husband and son finally found relief from their dry skin, and we all began using the body butter as a daily moisturizer.
