Laura Shull is a working artist living in the metro Atlanta area. Her oil paintings primarily feature women unabashedly indulging in moments of delight.

She creates her own costumes, dresses models in hand-styled wigs and accessories, and stages elaborate backdrops in her home studio in order to try and convey a sense of naturalism. Her inspirations are the Rococo movement, French pastries, and what it means to be a “lady”.

“Cherry on Top” 🍒

I’m honored to announce that this painting will be included in this year’s Metro Montage XXVI at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art!

Ive been quietly working away, trying to capture the warm candlelight glow and not over-complicate the brush strokes. It feels a little strange letting her out into the world after she’s been tucked away in my little studio for the last few months! She told me shes ready to party.

I hope to see you there on opening night!

Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches

I recently made the decision to leave the studio I was renting for the last 4.5 years, and move my practice back home.

While I loved the energy of my old studio and having the opportunity to meet so many lovely people at open houses, I came to realize that I thrive best in quiet, intimate spaces where I can focus deeply on my craft.

I’m trying to make it a habit to attend figure drawing groups so I don’t spiral into absolute hermitude, and I’m going to have to make an effort to remember that fresh air and other people are just as important as getting my brush strokes just right!

It’s been a refreshing change of pace getting my little corner just right and getting valuable feedback from my cats while I work. Here’s to reassessing and listening to what your gut tells you.

It’s been a while since I’ve shared something here, so I wanted to catch up and show you the details of my contribution to the upcoming Passport show.

When I first thought about the theme, I imagined places I’ve traveled to and places I’d love to see one day, but I kept coming back to the idea of capturing that moment when your mind starts to drift somewhere else entirely. Most of my traveling happens that way… while staring off into space, or when I close my eyes to fall asleep.

The Passport group runs April 17th to May 10th
