What will your client look like if they are hypoglycemic? For adults, this means their blood glucose level is less than 70, and their brain doesn't have enough fuel to function properly. They will be sleepy, hungry, irritable, lack coordination, and are often pale and sweaty!
Do you know how insulin works?? Understanding this key concept will go a long way to getting those diabetes NCLEX questions correct 💪
INSULIN is like a key! It unlocks our cells and allows glucose to get inside. GLUCOSE is energy for our cells! If cells can't get glucose - they don't have the energy they need to live. What happens when the body doesn't have insulin?? Glucose can't get inside the cells... they don't have energy, and the glucose is trapped outside in the blood vessels! That's what makes your client's blood sugar high when they have diabetes... and that's what causes most of the complications of diabetes!

Dreams do come through. Never thought I could be here.
Allergies.... fall precautions...aspiration precautions... seizure precautions... isolation precautions...neutropenic precautions... THE LIST GOES ON ðŸ˜
There are so many 'precautions' we have to take for our patients, and the NCELX will test you on all of them! Remember, this is a SAFETY test to ensure you can protect your patients! Safety and Infection control is 9-15% of your exam! So let's do a quick summary of the most common precautions:
🤧 ALLERGIES - Probably the most common
🤒 NEUTROPENIC PRECAUTIONS - Your client is at risk of developing an infection due to a compromised immune system! You'll need to take extra care to prevent any germs from getting into their room. Keep the door closed. NO sick visitors allowed...minimize visitation appropriately. No fresh flowers, fresh fruits, or fresh veggies. After water has been out for 4 hours - toss it!
#1 NCLEX TIP
Understand the WHY behind the signs and symptoms of each disease process you are studying.
WHY do we see all these signs in Cushing's Disease??
Clients with Cushing's have TOO MANY STEROIDS, which includes glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids.
Glucocorticoids cause immunosuppression, break down fats and proteins and inhibit insulin. S0, when a client has TOO MANY glucocorticoids, this leads to immunosuppression, fat redistribution (lipolysis of the extremities causing skinny arms and legs, but lipogenesis in the trunk causing truncal obesity and buffalo hump), and hyperglycemia
Mineralocorticoids cause retention of sodium and water and excretion of potassium. SO, when a client has TOO MANY mineralocorticoids this leads to fluid retention (weight gain, moon face), hypervolemic hypernatremia, and hypokalemia.

Let's talk about the different gauges of IVs
The GAUGE refers to how large the catheter that you'll be inserting is. Unlike with most of the other tubes and drains we use, the bigger the number of an gauge, the small the catheter is. From smallest to largest, the four most common sizes are 24, 22, 20, and 18 gauge. Lucky for us, they come in standardized colors so we know what we're dealing with!
QUESTION OF THE DAY.
The nurse in the outpatient clinic has four phone messages. Which message does the nurse return first?
ANSWERS SECTION.
(A) An older adult client undergoing bowel prep and reporting watery diarrhea.
(B) A client with a newborn and experiencing breast engorgement.
(C) A client who had a cataract extraction 3 days ago and reporting nausea.
(D) A client diagnosed with a C6 spinal cord injury and reporting a headache.
Keep commenting the correct answers.
CORRECT ANSWER (D)
A client diagnosed with a C6 spinal cord injury and reporting a headache.
A severe headache is indicative of autonomic dysreflexia in the client who has sustained a high-level spinal cord injury. Autonomic dysreflexia is associated with a dangerously high blood pressure, and, if untreated, can result in intracranial bleeding and death. This client is the most unstable and is experiencing a potentially life-threatening issue that needs to be addressed immediately by the nurse.
