Sound Tables

The use of Sound for therapeutic purposes is a vast field with methods and philosophies which vary tremendously.

Here I will expound a bit about what I have come to believe about this topic.

Primary therapeutic values of Sound (in my experience):

1) Sound can be mesmerizing and thereby induce a meditative state where the mind’s constant stressful and scattered thoughts are brought together into a more single-focussed arrangement. This is especially true when you can also feel the sound.

2) Sound, when felt and not just heard, brings the attention into the body, thereby restoring and strengthening the mind-body connection. Full-body awareness is fundamental to many healing modalities.

3) Sound, when felt moving through the body, opens up the pathways of body awareness (called energy channels, meridians, or nadis in far eastern traditions). As the sound moves through the body, the awareness and attention naturally and effortlessly follow the sound. Thus the awareness/attention is potentially set up to follow pathways that may be habitually neglected. The opening of these pathways is fundamental to many healing arts.

4) Sound, when felt in the body, works somewhat like a cellular massage. It shakes, rattles and vibrates the body tissues, but very gently (in general). Thus sound offers many of the proven health benefits of massage.

5) Sound potentially has emotional content and can invoke emotional responses. We are quite familiar with this effect from listening to our favorite music.

6) Sound invokes a simultaneous physical, mental and emotional experience, thus unifying the potentially disparate aspects of one’s state. Such a unified state is fundamental to many healing arts

Most commonly proposed therapeutic value of sound:

-Certain frequencies of sound invoke very specific effects. The application of these frequencies by a trained practitioner has healing effects.

In my view, this approach is quite problematic for many reasons:

1) It assumes that one knows precisely which frequency of sound has which effect.

2) It assumes some consistency in the vibrational characteristics of individuals. For example, that some I will respond in the same way to a given frequency as you will.

3) It has no basis (or very little basis) in traditional healing arts, which have had thousands of years to practice and evolve.

4) It is precisely rooted in the “pharmaceutical mindset” of modern culture. You have a certain problem, take this certain frequency. Just like a pill.

5) It is far removed from Nature. The natural surroundings in which we evolved are quite free of isolated frequencies of sound. The modern tech world in which we live is quite full of such isolated frequencies.

Physics of Sound and Vibrations Lesson 1.69.zero:

"Everything has a practically infinite set of nested and interdependent vibrational frequencies that uniquely define it."

Many people say "everything has a resonant frequency."

In fact, everything (or almost everything) in the universe has a practically infinite set of resonant frequencies.

Saying that "everything has a resonant frequency" is precisely like saying that "every tree has a length."

A tree has an infinite number of lengths, depending on which parts one measures.

But the sum of all the lengths of a tree and their relative angles gives it its unique shape.

Likewise, the sum of all the resonant frequencies of any "thing" and their relative proportions gives it its unique sound, its unique vibrational structure.

So...

"Everything has a practically infinite set of nested and interdependent vibrational frequencies that uniquely define it."
