We recently saw someone in a Facebook group looking for tallow mixed with honey, and thought it might be helpful to share a little formulation science for anyone shopping for tallow skincare.

Most tallow balms are anhydrous, meaning they contain only oils and fats and no water. This is one reason they tend to be very stable products.

Honey, however, is water-soluble and naturally contains a small amount of water. When an ingredient that contains water is introduced into an otherwise anhydrous formula, the chemistry of the product changes. That moisture can create microenvironments where microbial growth (bacteria, yeast, or mold) can occur if the product is not properly formulated.

To safely combine honey with oils or tallow, a formula should include:

• an emulsifier, which allows water-based and oil-based ingredients to properly combine

• a broad-spectrum preservative, which helps prevent microbial growth once water is present

Without those components, the product can become unstable over time.

Because of this, we choose not to add honey to our tallow products at ViTallow. We keep our formulas anhydrous, simple, and preservative-free to keep our products as natural as possible.

If you’re shopping for a honey + tallow product from any brand, it’s always a good idea to check the ingredient list and make sure the formula includes both a preservative and an emulsifier.
