I've been tending to this Cereus hexagonus for years, starting from a cutting I got when I first moved to New Orleans. Despite my efforts, it rarely bloomed—only a few flowers here and there. But this year, something unexpected happened. I completely neglected it just let it do it's thing on my front porch, and it thrived. Cereus hexagonus is a nocturnal bloomer. The flowers only come out at night, and they last just one night. That's why the photo isn't perfect—it was taken under streetlights. Nature has a way of surprising us, reminding me of the flowers thriving in the cracks of sidewalks.
