The Five Brain States

Did you know that your brain runs at a certain frequency?

Are you aware that this frequency is measurable?

Did you know that this frequency changes, depending upon your state of mind?

In alphabetical order the frequencies are:

- Alpha
- Beta
- Delta
- Gamma
- Theta

ALPHA
Alpha is what we call, “In The Zone.” It is the brain state that allows us to achieve hyper focus.

BETA
Beta is your every day thinking mind. We are in beta most of the time.

DELTA
Delta is Deep Sleep. Rapid eye movement or, REM sleep occurs at these cycles.

GAMMA
Gamma is a mystery, but more and more understood as we go. But we know that we are in this zone when we are actively learning or actively having a spiritual experience.

THETA
Theta is just before sleep and just after waking. It is when the mind is most suggestible. It’s exactly where hypnotists aim to get you.

Hyper-healing is known to occur during Theta, Delta, and mostly Gamma waves while the mind is FULLY AWAKE.

This is a very tough state to achieve. Theta and Delta are both geared towards sleep. Delta being geared towards deep sleep. so for some reason, if we can achieve these brain states while being conscious, hyper healing takes place. Crazy stuff!

I will soon do a series on each brain state, the best meditation to reach such brain state, and list all of the studies and evidence to the point. Stay tuned.

Failure is a construct of the mind. In all actuality, we either succeed in our endeavors, or we succeed in learning what doesn’t work.

There is nothing to defend. Just walk away. They will get the message, and you will get some peace.

People show you who you are to them by their actions. Or lack thereof. Chase your dream. But don’t chase people. It’s a fool’s game to do so.

Meditation is not “clearing the mind.” Meditation is watching the mind and it’s activity without getting involved.

You Don’t Have To “Take Time” To Meditate

The two biggest excuses I hear from people that don’t have a regular meditation schedule are the following:

1) I don’t have time

2) I can’t meditate/clear my mind

These are both falsehoods, and I’m going to show you why.

Today I’m going to cover the first one -

“I don’t have the time to meditate.”

What if you didn’t have to take any time at all to meditate every day?

What if there were a way to get some meditation time in, without having to stop activity, sit cross legged, and hum/chant?

Well, there is. And it’s actually quite simple.
Choose an activity that takes at least five minutes and is something you do at least three times a week.

My personal favorite? Dishwashing.

For reasons that are outside the scope of this post... I’m not a fan of automatic dishwashers.. I wash my dishes by hand. It’s just me here half the time, and my son and I the other half, so no huge task.

Meditation can be described as many things, but the one thing it always is, is moment-to-moment presence. To be meditating, you must be in the moment and not in your head, thinking..

For some beginners (like I was in the beginning), the best you can do to be present, is to continue to chase the mind back-and-forth. But that is for another post.

So the idea is to choose a task and be in the moment while you’re doing it. To not be thinking about other things, like past problems or future expectations. Just being present with the task at hand.

So this is dishwashing for me. And it goes like this -

- I stand in front of the sink and I start the water

- I notice the feeling of the bottoms of my feet
touching the floor and my gravity pushing me
down

- I move my attention to my breath flowing in and out, and the sound of the water running and dishes clanking

For the duration of this dishwashing session, my job (other than really clean dishes) is to listen to the sounds in the room, follow my breath, and watch my thoughts.

When a thought comes up, instead of getting into a conversation in my head, I just let the thought go. I bring my attention and focus back to the task at hand, the sounds in the room, and my breath flowing in an out.

When the mind wanders, just bring it back, over and over again until the dishes are done.. After a while (maybe a dozen or so sessions, everyone is different) the thoughts start to dissipate a little. You begin to feel a natural peace come about you when you set to do this task.

This is how you can meditate several times a week or even every day, without taking any extra time out of your schedule at all.

So what is your mindless task that you do several times a week that you can turn into a refreshing mindfulness practice?

The power of bringing your attention to your breath cannot be overstated.

Try this (it will only take one minute):

Put your mind/focus/attention/awareness on your breath. What do you notice? What happens when you do that?

Does the breath change when you focus on it? Does the quality, rythym, depth, etc. change for a split second when you first focus on it? Why is that?
