While a toupee allows you to reduce the time spent washing and styling your hair, there is a small amount of maintenance required to keep your toupee looking its best.

Your high-quality toupee has made you looking and feeling fabulous. The fit and modern styles of today’s toupees make life easier and can provide plenty of added confidence. For even more good news, these toupees are also simple to care for so you can maintain your stylish look for years to come. While a toupee allows you to reduce the time spent washing and styling your hair, there is a small amount of maintenance required to keep your toupee looking its best. Here is what you need to know about caring for your toupee.

Timing
Just like any hair, your toupee requires periodic cleaning. The advantage is toupees don’t have to be washed as often. You’re probably wondering how frequently to shampoo your toupee. This can vary quite a bit but the general rule of thumb is to wash toupees every 7 to 10 days.

There are many factors that determine how often your toupee needs to be cleaned. The first factor is how much you sweat. If you spend a considerable amount of time exercising or out in warmer weather, you should expect sweat and oils from your scalp to accumulate more quickly.

Keep in mind that spending all your time in cooler weather or avoiding exercising doesn’t mean you never need to wash your toupee. Scalp oils will still gradually spread to your toupee. External factors can also have a considerable impact on your toupee. Smoke from ci******es, pipes, or fireplaces can cling to your toupee as can other environmental contaminants like pollution.

Wash
When you shampoo your toupee, it is important to make sure you use the right maintenance products. Hair care products for toupees and wigs are made to either work on synthetic fibres or human hair. Check the label and purchase the right type for your toupee. People often assume regular shampoos will be perfect for human hair toupees. That’s a mistake. In addition to the hair, itself, you are also cleaning the cap that forms the foundation of your toupee. That is one reason why it is so important to use shampoo that has been specially formulated for wigs and toupees. The hair in your toupee doesn’t grow back so that makes it vital to gently care for your toupee so it will continue to look fabulous for many years to come.

To you wash your toupee, start by rinsing it with clean cool water. Carefully apply the wig shampoo and gently work it through the hair and cap. Rinse your toupee clean. Avoid tugging on the hairs or wringing out the toupee.

Condition
Protect your toupee by applying conditioner after you rinse out the shampoo. Be sure to use conditioner that is designed for your type of toupee. The conditioner helps to keep hair looking good so that it doesn’t fade or start looking dingy.

Leave-In
Adding a leave-in conditioner or fibre oil can reduce the amount of static electricity your toupee is likely to accumulate. It also helps to protect hairs from exposure to pollutants. A leave-in treatment is particularly important for toupees made with synthetic hair. Those synthetic fibres are more likely to attract static electricity.

Shape
After cleaning your toupee, it is important to put it on a wig stand where it can dry. Place the toupee on the stand and gently shape the hairs into your preferred style. Avoid combing or brushing the wet hair. Simply finger style the hair into place and leave the toupee on the stand to dry. The open framework provided by a wig stand holds the toupee in the correct shape while allowing good air flow from above and below the toupee to allow it to dry more quickly.

Style
Some toupees come pre-styled. Once gently shaped into the right shape while wet and left to dry, they look great in your usual style. If your toupee is made out of human hair or synthetic hair that allows for heat styling, you can, if desired, use heat styling tools to adjust your style once your toupee has finished drying completely.

If you’re worried about the occasional overnight break from wearing your toupee to allow it to wash after drying, one solution is to purchase a second toupee. That can enable you to simply switch to a different toupee when one is drying. The other option is to wash your toupee in the evening so that it has time to dry overnight.

This process is a great starting point for those wearing a wig for the first time however as you get more experienced you may come to find different ways of putting on and wearing your wig that work best for you.

By following a few simple steps you’ll have your wig on and looking great in no time. So let’s begin...

What You’ll Need:

A wig cap
Your wig
A wire wig brush (for synthetic wigs) or a normal brush (for human hair wigs)
Wig styling cream (optional
Please note: If your wig comes with a hair net in the box, this is simply to protect the wig and isn’t to be worn.

How to Put on Your Wig Cap

There are many views on whether a wig cap is necessary or not. On one hand, wig caps can aid a more secure fit, help to keep natural hair under control under the wig, and ensure better hygiene standards, however they can sometimes fall off, depending on how much your wig is moved throughout the day and depending on the shape of your head. Wearing a wig cap is purely down to personal preference and that’s why it’s always good to experiment and see what feels best on you. If you don’t want to wear a wig cap, skip to step 7.

Prepare your wig cap.
If you have long hair, start by tying it into a low ponytail or bunches so it’s easy to hide and tuck away. Stretch out the wig cap and position it in your hands so it’s ready to be worn.

Anchor the front of the wig cap on your forehead.
The inside of the wig cap should be placed just above your eyebrows to keep it in position, then take the back of the wig cap over your head, right down to the nape of your neck.
Tuck your hair under the wig cap so that it’s not visible.
If you have natural hair, to begin with, make sure it’s tucked away under the wig cap to avoid it being seen when wearing your wig.

Tuck excess hair underneath the wig cap at the back.
This step applies if you have long hair, ensure your ponytail is pushed under the wig cap.

Push the front of your wig cap back until it meets your natural hairline.

Ensure the sides of the wig cap are tucked behind your ears.



Putting on Your Wig


Find the wig label.
This helps to differentiate the front and back of the wig. The label sits at the back of the wig.

Find the ear points on the wig cap construction.
Before putting the wig on, grab onto the ear points on the side of the cap construction and position the label at the top.

Anchor the front of the wig on your forehead, just above your eyebrows.

Once the wig is on your head, the parting should form naturally.

Toggle and align the ear points to position the wig.
Gently pull both ear points to position the wig until it feels comfortable on your head. The ear points should align with one another and sit near your ears.

Hold the top of the wig and pull the back of the wig down to the nape of your neck.
With one hand, firmly hold the top of the wig in place and, with the other hand, pull the back of the wig down so the wig fits your whole head securely. Do the same for both sides.

The front of the wig should sit on your hairline, roughly 3 fingers away from your eyebrows.

Gently brush the wig and style to your preference.
Using the correct styling products for your wig, style it to your liking. For synthetic fibre wigs, use a proper metal wig brush, for human hair wigs use any normal brush but avoid metal brushes as this can cause damage to the human hair.
