A brief history of Sea buckthorn fruit oil
Healthy properties of sea buckthorn and the oil derived from its fruit were discovered as early as in the great antiquity. The first mention of the amazing power of sea buckthorn berries dates back to the time of ancient Tibet and Ancient Greece. Thus, Hippocrates in his treatises described in detail the beneficial effects of sea buckthorn fruit and its ability to treat effectively stomach diseases. The warriors of the Roman Empire and Ancient Egypt are thought to use sea buckthorn berries and its oil to heal wounds; while Avicenna, eminent Persian thinker, affirmed sea buckthorn oil to heal burns and skin damages.
Sea buckthorn’s proper name is “hippophae”, which derives from hippo (horse) and phaos (shining). So it’s no surprise that in Ancient Greece warhorses were fed with sea buckthorn fruits in order to enhance their stamina, to support weight gain, and to make their hair shine and silky. It’s likely that this fact gave birth to the belief that sea buckthorn fruit was the main food of Pegasus, mythical winged horse.
No matter what exactly were the origins of the sea buckthorn bush, the plant quickly spread throughout the world, and became an important part of the Tibetan and Indian medicinal systems. Slavs also were aware of the unique properties of sea buckthorn berries. The fruit was often served up to Russian tsars and considered to be a delicacy, while commonalty used the oil from berries to heal wounds and ulcers. Besides, it was the first folk remedy to treat and prevent avitaminosis.
In Russia, sea buckthorn oil as well as fruit were used to heal frostbites, which were not an uncommon thing in the country with such rigorous climate.
