Former First Lady Michelle Obama, shares her experience on being first lady and wanting to wear braids while serving in the White House but instead wore her hair straight because she felt "Americans weren't ready for her natural black hair".

In the article she states "her dilemma was an extreme example of the decisions Black women make daily to navigate the politics and sensibilities of their workplaces. They often find it easier, healthier and safer to wear braids, dreadlocks or Afros, but feel the pressure from white beauty standards and workplace norms to chemically straighten their hair for a more professional, "clean-cut" appearance"

The article mentions The CROWN ACT and how attitudes towards Black hair and protective styles are slowly making a shift in the right direction.

To this day, 19 states have signed the CROWN Act or legislation inspired by the CROWN Act, which prohibits discrimination based on someones hairstyle including bantu knots, braids, locs, or natural styles.
