For 100 years, women’s businesses AND business (that kind) have been controlled, with women being treated as second class citizens and objects. A few facts: It wasn’t until 1974 that women were allowed to open a credit card, take out a mortgage, or secure a business loan without a man’s signature. Up until 1988, women in some states still needed a male cosigner just to start a business. The Federal Reserve existed for 100 years before a woman led (2014). And today, women still receive just 4.4% of all business loan dollars while all female founding teams receive 1% of venture capital (and Latinas less than 0.1%).

A century of being told, in a thousand explicit and quiet ways, that the economy was not built for women to own.

And in our industry? At the legacy companies, there are no female CEOs. Decisions about women’s bodies made by people who’ve never used the products, described in language written by those who’ve never needed them, and sold back to the very women they’re meant to serve. And for female-founded companies in this category, the double standard ad restrictions don’t end there: they extend to how we’re allowed to speak, show up, and even exist.

By all accounts, maude is a statistical miracle. And we don’t take that lightly.

Today, we’re at the table and we’re here to take the torch and move forward. Female-founded, female-designed, and built on the belief that a century of being an afterthought is more than enough. Thank you for spending your dollars with intention. For supporting what we’re building. For having better taste, and demanding a smarter category.
