Leslie Matheos LMT
Thanks for taking the time to visit my page. I have been practicing massage since 2000. So client and practitioner must walk the healing path together.
My name is Leslie Matheos and I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), Craniosacral Therapist (CST) and Reiki Master. My perspective on bodywork is that, as the professional, my job is to be a healing facilitator. A lot of people in the healing professions seem to think that they heal their clients or patients. I firmly believe that we are individually required to be part of healing ourselves. Prac

I often ask clients, especially in therapeutic massage, how the pressure is. Sometimes they tell me it's fine when I can see them gritting their teeth. I don't know if they are trying not to hurt my feelings or if they've been taught that therapeutic massage has to be painful. But that's not the case! Please understand, I'm not in your nervous system. I have no way to know what you consider too painful. Some people like super deep, to the bone pressure. Some people consider that a living hell. Either (or somewhere in between) is a valid option, provided you're not tightening your muscles in response. If it hurts too much, your muscles start guarding, which means they tighten up to protect themselves from being hurt, especially if they are already hurt or near their ripping point. Then I have to work harder to effect the same change I could get if we were working gentler. Please don't do that. Therapeutic massage will be uncomfortable but I am serious when I ask you to tell me when it's too much. If you are gritting your teeth, holding your breath or tightening your muscles, it will actually take longer to get the muscle to release because it now thinks it's in danger and needs to protect itself. Just as you tighten up when you're alone in the house and you hear something threatening, your muscles won't relax when they think themselves in danger. If we move more slowly and gently and give the muscle reason to realize it won't be hurt worse, it will relax. So talk to me and tell me to back off when I need to. I promise, it's in your best interest.
