CURLY, by John H. Fouch, 1877. Curly (or Curley) was Custer’s most famous scout and the first to report Custer’s defeat at the Little Big Horn River. The rare 1877 photo by John H. Fouch, the first post photographer at Fort Keogh, is the earliest known portrait of Curly after the Battle.
In April 1876, Col. John Gibbon, leading the Montana 7th Infantry of Fort Ellis and Fort Shaw, recruited 25 scouts from Crow Indian Agency. On June 21, 1876, Gibbon's men rendezvoused with General Terry's Dakota Column at Rosebud Creek. Curly, the youngest, and five other scouts were then assigned to Custer.
Curly was the first to reach the steamship Far West with news of Custer’s annihilation. Capt. Grant Marsh and the Far West transported 52 of Major Reno’s wounded to Bismarck (ND) in 54 hours. News was then telegraphed to a stunned nation during its Centennial celebration. -Gary Coffrin
