After 7 years, I’m bidding adieu to and welcoming a new phase in my teaching:

In 2015, after graduating from law school and deciding to pursue teaching yoga, it was a mad scramble to make anything happen. I’d teach any one, any where, any time. I’d leave my apartment as early as 5:15am and wouldn’t come home until after 10pm, often teaching as many as 9 classes in completely different locations all across NYC and the surrounding area.

There was little time (or energy) to reflect on the direction of my teaching, on how I wanted to grow in this path. What, actually, was I teaching? The focus was simply to figure out how to make a living teaching.

For all its tragedies and pitfalls, COVID gave me that space. It allowed me to finally release teaching yoga as a primarily physical practice and experience (and thus the farewell of the very physical name involving a yoga pose).

My aim as a teacher is no longer to kick your butt, to teach you the alignment of the pose for the posture’s sake, or merely to give you a workout.

Rather, I endeavor to teach you how to practice yoga to transform yourself (body, mind, and all those layers in between). To equip you with tools of self-discovery and to hold space for you to get to know yourself. If you’ve never prectoced with me virtually, I’d love to have you - class is on me. DM or email me at [email protected].

In my experience, exploring each corner of myself (through movement, breath, stillness) has transformed disconnection to connection, disease to ease, and has enabled me to feel whole and well.

Asana(physical postures) were my portal into this, but that’s just one avenue. I hope you find yours.

Love,

Amy

Patterns are funny. After much time and energy to make this hike happen, I managed to miss a lot of it. That habit of checking boxes, getting things done, and hurrying to some perceived finish line made me rush. I rushed past these these mountains and birds and glaciers.
I find myself often doing the same thing when I run (how much is left? Am I almost done?).
How did we all seem to forget how to have fun? How to engage in leisure activities as if they are, in fact, for leisure.
What do you practice in your day to day life? How do you feel most of the time?
It turns out, we get really good at existing in that “normal” or “work” pattern.
So, here’s to revamping whatever pattern we might be stuck in and to finding one that actually serves us.
Mine is rushing, I seem to be bogged down by the absurd feeling that I don’t have enough time; when, in reality, time is abundant. Rather than feeling like the days are never long enough, I choose to marvel at how much we can do in a day.
What’s yours?
Let’s practice what we actually want to get good at — a feeling, a mindset, a habit. All the above.

I always hated swimming: it was so much work, I was cold for hours afterward, and I swallowed what seemed like gallons of water every lap. Growing up, I excelled at nearly every athletic endeavor…except swimming. Hating something and being bad at something obviously go hand in hand, and it leads you to the classic chicken and egg problem.
In my early thirties, I signed up for a sprint triathlon (my best friend tricked me—she was the kind who swims laps, a concept that leaves me dumbfound) and I somehow committed to swimming in the Long Island Sound at 6am in May. I was completely dreading it, completely terrified of it, and eventually got through it.
I still hated swimming. I swallowed all those gallons of water, I was colder than cold, and I was definitely not breaking records.
Fast forward another few years, and swimming suddenly feels like my oasis. It’s so quiet. It teaches to synchronize my movements and my breath. To really exhale, so that I can fully inhale. To listen for the steadiness in the bubbles I blow, because the moment they’re uneven, I start swilling those gallons.
It has taught me to slow down, and in that patience, I have found freedom. I feel strong, steady, and calm. Also, my back doesn’t hurt—neither during, nor when I finish. It’s made me see how silly it is that we accept pain so easily, that we assume exercise should (at least sometimes) be associated to soreness and muscular discomfort.
I no longer fight the water, my body, or my thoughts.
Maybe your teacher has a different shape, maybe there’s no where you can swim or maybe you don’t know how to swim. But maybe try something old again? Like it was brand new, and see how it feels?
Love,
Amy

Happiness isn’t spontaneous, nor is it mysterious. Study yourself. Study your habits, how you spend your free time, how you engage with people you love. How’s it going? What things make you feel full? What makes you feel spent? Adjust. Explore. Re-study. How’s it going now?
Feeling happy is simply a consequence of choices you make.
Empower yourself to choose wisely. It’s pretty great that it’s actually up to us ❤️

There are surely moments where the stress components of my job overwhelm me. But basically, I feel like I won the lottery. From these little tents in Morocco to a colonial gem in Queretaro, I’m coming together with some of my favorite humans in the world to retreat—or rather, to progress. To learn, move, breathe, expand, be.
Sometimes I’m not sure how exactly I got here—how I got from law school to leading yoga retreats—but boy, I’m the luckiest girl in the world.
And yet, not picture, are the many many bumps in the road. How hard I worked. How hard it was to start, and how hard in many ways it continues to be. How many times I woke up at 5am to teach, and didn’t get home until 11pm after teaching 8 classes in three Burroughs. How hard it was to listen to myself when I was unhappy, and how hard it was to devote time and energy to figuring out what brings me joy, day in and day out. It was worth every minute.
Have you made some time to listen to yourself?

Darlings! Here’s the thing: I HATE social media. I hate how it makes me feel. How it makes me behave. How it makes me scroll and judge and like and dislike.
So, I’ve basically been unwilling to participate because I can’t figure out how to post in such a way that actually adds value to your life. That actually makes you feel better. But trust me, I’ve been working on it.
I haven’t fully figured it out yet but here’s what I’ve got so far: a) f**k curating pictures b) try to actually share things that nourish you c) be me.
In that spirit, this magazine brings me such joy. Every issue is insightful, beautifully written, soul crushing, uplifting (sometimes both at the same time). Reading it makes me feel spacious and curious and like a Queen who has time to read a magazine. They are a small business committed to authenticity and truth and are completely ad free. Obviously, I can’t recommend them enough (and no, they didn’t pay me to write this).
I hope there’s something like this in your life. And if there isn’t, maybe give The Sun a go ☀️ 📖 🌴
Sending love. ❤️

The Business of Teaching Yoga
300 Hour Module
For all the community that yoga brings us, I never found a space to talk about how to really make a living teaching. How was everyone getting their private clients? What were they charging them? What’s up with liability and LLCs? How do you brand your business? How do you start leading retreats?
I created this module to create the space for us to learn about all this. Teaching for a living isn’t easy, and there’s no reason to navigate it at alone.
Join me for a 25-hour training, where you will learn the tools necessary to thrive in the profession of teaching yoga: how to navigate teaching at studios, how to teach clients of varying backgrounds, interests and capabilities, how to build and sell yoga retreats, and how to adapt your business to our post-COVID world.
Perfect for all teachers who are seeking to develop their business, no matter where you are.
Throughout this 25 hour module, we’ll explore:
- Teaching virtually: from the what to the how and to who
- In depth exploration of teaching private clients
- Moving beyond props: using walls and chairs and tables in your teaching so you can teach anyone
- What does a career as a yoga teacher look like? What path do I want to be on and how do I get there? What kind of yoga teacher do I want to be?
- Continued training: how do I keep learning in a more consistent and more affordable way so that my teaching continues to grow?
- Developing your Self-Practice
- Marketing
- Business modeling
- Branding
- Retreat considerations and building
