We’re deeply saddened by the passing of Muscle Shoals’ own Donna Jean Godchaux. Before her legendary years with the Grateful Dead, Donna Jean began right here at FAME and in the Shoals, lending her voice to classics like When a Man Loves a Woman and Suspicious Minds.

Her soulful spirit and powerful voice helped shape the sound of a generation. The entire FAME family honors her legacy and sends love to her family and friends.

The Grateful Dead played their final Nashville show 47 years ago today at the Municipal Auditorium. During the performance, Jerry played his Travis Bean TB1000A #164, which he had only used a few times that week while Wolf was being repaired—this night marking its last appearance during a Dead show.

Jerry Garcia in 1976 was at a pivotal moment in his career, both as a member of the Grateful Dead and as a solo artist. During this time, the band was in the midst of a brief hiatus, allowing Garcia to focus on other projects, including his side band, the Jerry Garcia Band. 1976 saw him experimenting with different musical styles, blending folk, rock, blues, and jazz into his signature sound. With his long, flowing hair and expressive guitar playing, Garcia was the epitome of the laid-back, yet passionate musician. His performances during this year were marked by a relaxed yet deeply connected energy, showcasing his ability to communicate with his audience through his improvisational skills. 🎸✨

This is one of the last known photos of Jerry Garcia, taken as he performed onstage during his final show with the Grateful Dead on July 9, 1995. According to his bandmate Bob Weir, the last words that Garcia spoke to him as he walked off stage were "Always a hoot."

Shortly thereafter, Garcia checked himself into the Betty Ford Clinic in hopes of finally kicking his addiction to co***ne and he**in.
