Madam C.J. Walker (born Sarah Breedlove; 1867–1919) was an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and activist. She is best known as the first self-made female millionaire in the United States, thanks to her successful line of hair care and beauty products designed for Black women.
Born to formerly enslaved parents in Louisiana, Walker faced hardship early in life, working as a laundress before developing her own line of hair and scalp treatments. She built a thriving business, the “Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company”, and trained thousands of women in sales and entrepreneurship. Her success allowed her to become a major philanthropist, funding scholarships and donating to civil rights causes, including the NAACP.
Madam C.J. Walker’s legacy stands as a testament to Black excellence, female empowerment, and groundbreaking entrepreneurship. Her resilience and vision not only redefined the beauty industry but also paved the way for small business owners like myself to thrive, innovate, and uplift our communities.
