PAIN, DISCOMFORT, & BODY FATIGUE?

Structural Integration is a form of bodywork that reorganizes the connective tissues, called fascia. Fascia is designed to be supple and move freely with muscles and bones.

Injury, stress, work-related repetitive movements and the effects of aging can cause fascia to become less elastic and become shorter, tighter, and more dense. Tightened fascia pulls our muscles and skeleton out of proper alignment. The result: pain, discomfort, and fatigue.

Structural Integration bodywork involves lengthening and softening fascia to restore postural balance, ease of movement, and an overall feeling of wellbeing. Sessions can be done in a series of ten sessions or individual sessions designed to align and integrate the body. For more information check out: http://elizabethelse.com/services/

Since spraining my own ankle this week, I thought is was beneficial to tell you what happens to the body in such an instance: When you sprain your ankle, the immediate response is for your body to protect itself by shifting the weight of your body to the uninjured side during the healing process. The entire body adapts to this new position and all of the joints & muscles on the uninjured side are put under new stress setting the stage for additional pain and injury.

As the ankle heals & becomes able to bear weight again, you might think you are "back to normal" but, unfortunately, the adhesions and scar tissue created have become a permanent part of your structure during the healing process. Without intervention, the connective tissue will continue to form thicker, stronger adhesions, forcing muscles to shorten and lose the ability to completely relax, resulting in a constant state of tension.

Any injury effects the body as a whole. This is when Structural Integration becomes a great form of bodywork integrating the entire body, not just the specific area that's injured. By making sure the body is functioning properly, one can speed recovery and decrease the chance of another injury.

Question of the day!: How is Structural Integration different from Chiropractic and massage?

Massage focuses on relaxing and releasing muscular tension and stress while SI works by aligning the body systematically by working the network of connective tissue called fascia. SI work involves palpating the tissue to feel for imbalances, separating fascial layers, and integrating the body.

Chiropractors work with alignment by adjusting the skeletal system. There are no quick adjustments in SI work; however, the skeletal system is often able to sustain proper alignment when the soft tissue strains are addressed. The two practices can be complementary and may help chiropractic adjustments last!
