Your Summer Skin Needs You

If you invest in your skin in anyway, it is paramount that you protect your investment by using sunscreen! Sunscreen is not just for protecting against a sunburn and skin cancer, it is also for preventing skin damage associated with UVA/UVB rays from the sun.

Sun exposure is responsible for 80-90% of visible aging!!!
Limit your sun exposure to help prevent lines, redness, breakouts, discoloration, and texture (enlarged pores).

The sun damages our skin faster than our products and treatments can reverse the damage.

You will save your future-self time, $$$ and hassle by preventing sun damage rather than trying to fix it later.

SPF - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
SPF stands for sun protection factor which is the scale based on the time it takes for skin to burn when exposed to UV rays. For example, using SPF 30 means it will take 30 times as long for your skin to burn than it does with no sunscreen. This is a carefully measured number and requires lab testing.

SPF 30 is the recommended minimum.

Sunscreen should be the last product you apply.

For adequate sun protection, you need to apply 1/4 teaspoon (three fingers) to your face and neck, plus a shot glass amount of sunscreen for your body.

Reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming/sweating.

No sunscreen will prevent 100% of rays, you should pair your sunscreen with other sun protection strategies, like avoiding the sun during peak hours, wearing UPF clothing, wearing hats and sunglasses, and seeking shade when outside.

Mineral sunscreen physically blocks UV rays, while chemical types absorb rays. One type isn't necessarily better than the other - a sunscreen you love and will use consistently is a great sunscreen!

Your make up "with SPF" or lotion "with SPF" isn't cutting it! SPF in makeup and lotion products is diluted and you would have to use a TON of it for protection.

UVB rays are responsible for sunburns, dryness and peeling of the skin. They can also cause long-term damage like premature aging, wrinkles and skin cancer.

95% of UV radiation consists of UVA rays. These pe*****te deeper into the skin and are responsible for tanning as well as contributing to the risk of skin cancer.

Yes, you need it year-round! UV rays pe*****te glass, clouds, clothing and reflect off of snow and water.

The FDA requires all sunscreens to maintain their full strength for 3 years.

Don't forget your lips, neck, chest and hands.

Let's Prioritize Self Love

I am hearing from clients that world events are causing them major anxiety and grief. That, coupled with being in the depths of the cold dark winter, make for fragile emotional times. I encourage you to try to turn your focus inward, back to your world. What can you control? and what can we romanticize about our day-to-day that can keep you grounded? For me, this looks like getting in good workouts (bonus points if the outfit is cute), planning cozy meals to look forward to, and of course, skincare.

Spend your time in the mornings and evenings cleansing and applying products like the regal beast you are. Being consistent with my skincare and treating it like a personal spa time gives me a sense of control and worth. I am a firm believer in "if you look good, you play good", so I embrace the efforts to brave the world and chaos - but with more good skin days.

2024 started out strong and just kept getting better! I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the privilege of getting to do what I love. For 2025, I am eschewing a resolution of discipline in place of a goal of asking for more and graciously accepting all the good that flows in. When things are going well, I have a habit of thinking "enjoy it while it lasts!", but what if instead, we asked "what if this is just the beginning?!" In the coming year I hope you are gentle with yourself and prioritize all of the guilt-free rest that you need.
