My grandma thought Roy was a teenager the night that he invited her over to his porch in 1958, and she believed he was a boy. He wore blue jeans and a work shirt and kept his hair cropped in a crew cut. My grandma didn't know that Roy bound his breasts every morning or that the woman who raised him wasn't his mother at all.

I've been reading old newspaper articles about north Louisiana cotton plantations, and today, I found tucked in all my cotton files an 1877 article about Ben Jane Jones, a Louisiana prisoner who identified as nonbinary: Jones said "he did not belong to one s*x or the other, although claiming to be of the feminine gender as near as possible."

We're back in Delhi, working on "Diary of a Misfit" this weekend !
Mississippi family: We're coming to Jackson on April 2 to screen "Battle of Little Pam," a short culled from "Diary" at The Crossroads Film Festival. Casey will be speaking in a panel discussion after the film. Holler if you need ticket information!
